Okay what is the deal with the like point system in hockey, instead of doing the standings based on wins and losses?

Personnally I think thats another one of the reasons thats keeping hockey from becoming a more popular sport, every casual fan know wins and losses (like me) but joe blow off the street will have no clue if you tell them that the Caps are two points out of a playoff spot.

I like the point system, and I understand it now more than I did before the most recent rules-change, but theres one thing I don't like:

I still don't like that you get a point for losing in overtime/shootout. It really shouldn't be that way if there are no ties. It made sense to get no points for a loss, two for a win, and one for a tie, but I don't like that you get a point for losing. An overtime loss is still a loss.

I do agree with you that the points system does turn away some fans or at least hurts hockey in the mainstream media.
