Smoak went 4-4 with his 18th HR and 3 walks. That's quite a night!

Gordon Beckham went 2-3 with his 20th HR.

Lots of good players to pick from !

Got to see Gordon Beckham today on ESPN-U. Before the game, my impression of him was that he'd be a stocky looking guy with short arms (kind of like Marcus Giles). But he's actually a bit on the slim side with a proportioned body (not stocky at all). I just don't know where his power is coming from because he doesn't look at all like a power guy. He looks decently athletic to play SS in the MLB, but if he can't, 2B looks entirely possible.

His 1st AB, his swing looked good as he took a shot to RF (nice to see him using the opposite field), but his aluminum bat broke, making his probable extra base hit into a solid flare to the right fielder. Announcers mentioned that that wasn't the first time he broke an aluminum bat, hinting that his bat speed is that quick.

He keeps his hands/bat slightly further away from his body than I'd like to see in his stance, and that is probably to put more sting on the ball. But his bat speed looked good.

From watching him, I don't get the impression that he's a top 4 pick, but he coes look like a top 10 pick.

None of this beats the year Buster Posey is having.

Does anyone have any stats on how GBeck did in the Cape league or another wooden bat league? Just curious in the change from aluminum to wood. Kid is impressive, and will make someone a lucky GM.

Scroll down to the very bottom for Beckham's (and Posey's) numbers. He played very well, leading the league in HRs.

BTW, do Posey's Cape league numbers give pause to anyone else? I'd want to make sure he can definitely hit well with wooden bats before drafting him. But then again, I'm not that high on Posey to begin with.

Beckham's K:BB ratio was ugly in the Cape Cod League.

Yonder Alonso had a terrific turnout. Is he not high on everyone's radar cause he's limited defensively (maybe only a DH)? The guy can rake the ball and get on base.

I like Smoak's eye and patience in that at-bat. Did you see the pitches that Clemson guy was throwing to him? Nothing but curves on the outside (making sure he wouldn't give Smoak anything juicy to hit). But that pitcher made a mistake and threw a curve inside, and Smoak made sure he made the pitcher pay for his mistake.

He looks so comfortable at the plate. He looks at home with a bat in his hands.

Thanks!! Yeah, I'm a little disturbed by the 11 errors by Gordon, but with a bat like that I would take avg defense and be more than happy. I'm not really high on Posey either, but I think he is a late riser that could be a high pick next year if he was willing to gamble a bit.

As a Clemson grad, there's no way I can approve of that video, or of the Orioles drafting Smoak.
