"We will move forward in the next cycle with the current format," said Swofford, who serves as BCS chairman. "I believe the BCS has never been healthier in its first decade."

I'll have what he's having:rolleyes:

I think that, unless something really crazy happens (like Maryland making a BCS game :D) I'm going to stop watching the BCS.

Hopefully others will as well. Drop the TV ratings and you kill the reasoning behind them.

I don't think they care about people watching the actual games, to be honest. Because people would watch playoff games. And they would watch the "meaningless" bowl games that aren't part of the playoffs, since they already do that.

What they like is getting 843749 bajillion dollars to call a game the Gizoogle.com Greasy Chilli Con Carne Nacho Bowl (note, I made this up) so that the talking heads on ESPN all say it, and the newspapers print it, and what have you, etcetera.

Everyone in the country who cares about football wants a playoff, except for the few suits who actually make that decision.

It's amazing.

Division I football is great in spite of its decision makers. It's great because of the pageantry, the rivalries, the athletes and the fact that it's football we're talking about. Adding a playoff system would add that much more intrigue to the equation. If you had a 16-team playoff with each conference champ guaranteed a slot, how much would it boost Division I football all the way from the top to the bottom?

The money surely would grow. Could you imagine the NCAA junking the basketball tournaments and going to bowl games to decide the national basketball champions? Ludicrous, isn't it? Well, that's what they keep doing in reverse here.

Personally, IMO, the reason we keep getting saddled by all these meaningless bowl games is that college presidents, their ADs and staff all get a free trip once a year during the holidays because of the bowl system. Since a large number of the schools get a trip, that makes for a lot of happy college brass. A playoff system jettisons the parties, the free food, free booze, etc, and replaces it with meaningful football. That's not as much fun for the decision makers. That's my opinion -- that the bowl powers-that-be line their pockets and bellies so full that they don't want it to stop.

If there are more putrid games like the round of BCS bowls this past season, then that's exactly what will happen.

You gotta love the sheer arrogance of these conference commisioners and university presidents as they flip the bird at the rest of us. "Nevermind what the other 300 million Americans want, we'll take our money and cheapen college football whatever way we please."

Idiots.

It doesn't have to. A playoff system can be created that still incorporates the current bowl games. Teams that had good seasons but not good enough to make an 8-team playoff (an 8-team format is just my personal preference) can still be invited to play in bowl games in warm, sunny destinations. And if there's concern that fans of playoff teams won't travel for what could be as many as three games, then my suggestion is that some of these conferences put and end to the championship games (are you listening ACC, SEC, Big 12?)....that ought to help.

I was referring to the former, becuase I'd bet they could make even more money and give the public what it wants if they weren't so stubborn. As for the latter, just because you hate the system doesn't mean you abandon the product you've come to love over time....if that were the case I would think this message board would be a very quiet place. ;)

Peter Schmuck just about says it all (http://www.baltimoresun.com/sports/college/football/bal-sp.schmuck04may04,0,2694208.column)...

News item: The NCAA has approved two more football bowl games - including one in Washington - to bring the total number of postseason bowls to 34.

My take: If you're keeping score at home, that means there will now be more bowl-eligible teams next season than participants in the NCAA basketball tournament.

Bonus take: Make you a deal. I'll agree to watch North Texas play in the 2008 equivalent of the Poulan Weed Eater Bowl if the NCAA will agree to a four-team playoff for the national championship.

The only exception I have is that I'm pretty sure it's not actually the NCAA that's the cause of the problem here (now there's a first). But the fact that we will now have two more end-of-season games featuring uninteresting 6-6 teams, instead of games that truly determine a champion on the field, just about sums up this whole system in a nutshell.

I think your right. From what I've heard Div-1A is the only division without an NCAA recognized national champion.
