Let's go O's!
Expecting a good outing from Albers tonight. Hopefully we can get some runs on the board early and let him settle into a nice outing.

It probably wasn't a matter of planning, it was a matter of Melvin missing the sign. Anybody else think Brian had his hand back in before the tag?

BRob looked safe to me.
That's what I was thinking and now Scott just got called out on a grass cutter.Home plate umpiring seems worse than usual this year. For those of you who don't remember the great Chuck Thompson. he always used to say they should take the best ball/strike umpires and let them do every game. Not going to happen of course with the umpires union.

Mora missed sign. Why hit and run anyway? Why not a straight steal?
Sonnanstine is known for being very good at holding runners on so Brian may not have had a read on him yet. Now that I think about it, it was poor planning aside from the missed sign. Trembley tries to get cute on the basepaths too often. The CS on botched hit and runs are really adding up.

I understand a hit and run with a slow runner to stay out of the double play. But why with Roberts? Much better to just let him steal if you are worried about the twin killing, and you shouldn't with your #2 hitter in the first.

It's the speed of the hitter that primarily matters for staying out of a DP, not the guy on first. Mora has average speed but he does ground into a lot of DPs. I guess Trembley just wanted to force the issue. He's overmanaging with some of this stuff for sure.
Orioles Magic
04-30-2008, 07:27 PM
Correction--Longoria was grazed by the last pitch. Albers walks next batter. Only 1 strike in last 11 pitches to plate. Ramon should try to come him down.

Obviously I'm watching on a computer screen and not live, but he had a short lead and not much of a jump. It looked like he wasn't even 1/3 of the way there when he looked in and saw Melvin hadn't even swung. And he did make it back to first, the umpire just didn't think so.

Not a bad inning considering. Albers needs a couple of quick ones or we're going to get deep in the pen tonight. He already had one. He should be able to settle down and throw 5-6 innings. It doesn't seem to me that he's having bad command, he's just not throwing the ball where the ump is calling strikes. He seems to be trying to throw real low and just isn't getting that call. If he can make an adjustment and find some spots to get some groundballs, he'll be fine.

This game is looking like it will be one of the following 2 stories:
We make several baserunning mistakes, bad defensive plays, leave runners on base, walk guys, etc. but somehow keep it close and come back to win late.
or
We do all of the same as above and get blown out.
Not much focus tonight from the guys. Bad sign-getting/execution from Mora, bad defense from Albers/Roberts, walks by Albers, and bad baserunning by Millar.

Albers getting no help from his defense tonight (his own included). The grounder up the middle that he missed for a DP then Roberts missed for a force. The cutoff ball that got caught in Millar's glove where they would've had Hinske at 3rd. The ball that Hernandez played in the deep hole by Longoria that he should've charged a bit (possibly slower getting to it b/c of the ankle injury) and then Roberts' error.
