Seriously hoping we get Beckham or Alvarez

Despite the probability we'll land a pretty good player at the 4 spot, irregardless of who it will be, I am seriously hoping by chance we wind up with Beckham or Alvarez. This would mean that Crow or Matusz will be taken in the top 3, or possibly the catcher Posey leapfrogs the pitchers into the top 3.

To me, they make the most sense. Beckham obviously gives us a highly rated SS and a potential leadoff hitter (or 3rd batter). Alvarez makes sense because he can play 3B. This gives us options with Rowell--if he hits and fields like an MLB 3B, we can slide Alvarez over to 1B/DH. If Rowell's fielding is inadequate, we can move him to LF/1B/DH.

I'm all for a great pitching staff, and I like the thought of adding Crow or Matusz to the arms we already have. Having the deepest starting rotation would be awesome. But I wouldn't think that missing out on Crow or Matusz will ruin our plans--we'll still have a lot of good arms in the minors without them.

I like power hitting 1B (Smoak and Hosmer), but we may fill that need by going after Teixeira, or by filling it internally (Snyder or Rowell).

On draft day, there are only two names I'll be intently listening for, and that's Beckham and Alvarez--and I hope both those names aren't called in the first 3 picks. Inevitably, one will be called in the top 3, but its my hope that they won't both be gone.

It won't be awful if we get Matusz, Crow, Smoak, Hosmer, or Alonso, but I will feel disappointed, only because I think Beckham and Alvarez are the best fits.

I agree that I would like to get one of the 2 you mentioned (Alvarez first) but I hope we aren't looking at this just for need in the organization. I would rather let Jordan draft the guy who he thinks is the best overall player. Also, I don't think we would go wrong with drafting Hosmer or Smoak, especially Hosmer who it is said is just phenomenal.

Funny you mention that cause the only reason I used that word is because a friend of mine says it that way, and I was beginning to think maybe I was the one in error, for saying regardless :)

You are right, that can't be selecting out of need. We are in no position to say we are in good enough shape to draft specific positions, rather than going with the best available talent. But if it works out that we can draft either Beckham or Alvarez, I think that'll be ideal.

We are certainly lacking in power, as well as bats that consistently make good contact (talking about our parent team). We waste a lot of opportunities to drive in runs, and we also lack big innings because of our lack of power. In this regard, getting a bat like Alvarez, Smoak, Hosmer, and Alonso will help.

If the players grade out to be very similar then you may factor in whether or not your system is in need of a certain position. Otherwise take the highest rated player on the board and move on.

Not a mistake to take the #5 guy if you need bats as badlly as we do, and a pitcher at #4 is just a pitch away from getting nothing out of this pick. Don't waste the pick on a pitcher. In "this draft" there are enough hitters to pick a good one at 4.
