I'm really surprised there wasn't a thread for this already...

Anyway, I saw it yesterday afternoon. It was incredible. Easily in my top 5 comic book/superhero movies. It was in the vein of Batman Begins, where they spent a good amount of time building up character before getting to the suit and most of the action. But it was never boring. You got to see Tony Stark go from selfish smartass to hero smartass.

Robert Downey Jr. simply IS Tony Stark. Best casting choice I've ever seen in my life. There isn't an overload of action, but when it happens, its awesome. The special effects are some of the best I've ever seen, on par with Transformers. Lots of comedic moments, like Tony Stark making fun of comic book cliches.

Plenty of references for the comic book nerds (me). S.H.I.E.L.D. makes an appearance along with the "Ten Rings". They set up the making of The Mandarin very nicely. And theres an amazing scene if you stay until after the credits roll. Definitely worth the wait.

I'm nowhere near any kind of comic book junkie. The S.H.I.E.L.D. and "Ten Rings" references mean absolutely nothing to me.

That being said, it was one of the best action movies I've seen in a long time. Even the wife loved it. We can't wait to see it again with our soon-to-be-10-year-old son. Robert Downey, Jr. was phenomenal as Tony Stark. I can't think of another actor that could have played that role any better. It was well-written, well-casted, and well-produced. Kudos to everyone from Downey, Jr. to Paltrow and producer Jon Favreau.

Can you advise on the scene after the credits? I thought about staying, but we were with another couple.

Seriously, as soon as it was over I told my wife it's one I'll buy on DVD when it's available. I can't wait for a sequel.

Absolutely amazing. More on this movie later, after I watch it again. Also, the Dark Knight is going to be absolutely amazing, and Harrison Ford just looks old.

I want to see this movie, but I still blame Iron Man for Captain America imprisonment and eventually his death!!

Spoiler: When Tony Stark returns to his house after the press conference, theres somebody standing there in the dark. "Iron Man, huh?" Stark asks him who he is, then we see Samuel L. Jackson step forward. He introduces himself as Nick Fury, head of S.H.I.E.L.D. Fury says something along the lines of, "You think you're the only one out there thats special? I'm here to talk to you about the Avengers Initiative." End scene. I'm hoping for an Avengers movie after Hulk, Captain America, Thor, Ant-Man, etc. get their own movies. The plot could be to stop a rampaging Hulk. It would be monumental.

I liked it a lot. Definitely stay for after the credits. I agree that Downey was perfect for this role. I'm not big into comic books at all, never read them as a kid. But I really, really enjoyed this movie.

I saw it and enjoyed it, but like Batman Begins, I didn't think it was the greatest thing since sliced bread. Downey Jr. was great as Starks, and the supporting cast filled in nicely too... although I did feel like Terrence Howard was underused. Hopefully he'll get his due in the sequel. I also thought the film needed more urgent action. The stuff with the air force planes was unnecessary. Loved the ending... especially the last line.

Terrence Howard's sole purpose of being in the movie was to set him up for the sequel(s). In the comics he becomes War Machine and even takes over as Iron Man for a time while Stark can't. I fully expect to see War Machine appear in the next movie and team up with Iron Man. Most of the cast signed 3 movie deals.

It's not even debatable whether War Machine shows up next time. Remember Rhodes looking at the War Machine suit and literally saying "next time"? That's a pretty obvious, completely breaking-the-fourth-wall clue to me. :p

Some of you went to see it over the weekend. It brought in $100.7m in the US and $201 million worldwide. Now that Robert Downey Jr has some coin in his pocket, maybe the producers will hire a bodyguard for him so that he won't show up stoned in some of his neighbors homes anymore. ;)

Marvel turns 'Iron Man' into gold (http://movies.msn.com/movies/article.aspx?news=312506)

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- "Iron Man" was pure gold at the box office.

The Marvel Comics adaptation, starring Robert Downey Jr. as the guy in the metal suit, hauled in $100.7 million during its opening weekend and $104.2 million since debuting Thursday night, the second-best premiere ever for a nonsequel, according to studio estimates Sunday.

The film also scored overseas with $96.7 million in 57 countries where it began opening Wednesday, putting its worldwide total at $201 million.

I went and saw this on my day off yesterday. I thought it was really well done. I would have liked a bit more action, but overall thought the pacing of the movie was good.

As far as the Avengers movie goes, I really like that a lot of the characters are having their own movies first, to get a lot of the origin-telling out of the way. I'm really excited about the Captain America movie, as he was my favorite comic book hero. It'd be really awesome if the CA movie was WW2 and Red Skull, and the suspended animation would be at the end, making a lead-in to the Avengers movie. That'd be a lot to cram into one movie though, and I don't know if they'd have Bucky in it, or Baron Zemo. It's probably more likely that they shorten his origin, and have the movie mostly be about his adjustment to the modern world.

I was always more of a Marvel Comics reader, so I'm really excited about the movies they're putting out.

I'm seeing this again on Sunday. I think I'm more psyched to see it a second time than I was the first time.

So far Iron Man has made $185 million domestically and $165 million internationally, for a worldwide total of $350 million. It cost them $140 million to make. I'd say it was successful.

If I weren't strapped, and saving that movie budget money for Indy, I'd go again.

Spoilers below:
Man, that last scene (not the after credits)...I knew he was gonna do that. I mean, I guess because I know a little about the character it was obvious that he wasn't going to be a secret identity guy, but the way he did it...I knew that's how it was gonna go. But the editing and sound work for that lead out was perfect. Kicked in the Black Sabbath at just the right moment.

And everytime he said "didn't expect that" or argued with the robot he refers to as Dummy was gold. The whole "you douse me again and I'm donating you to a city college" line...god I'm still cracking up.

I have to say that Robert Downey Jr. MADE this movie. He was the absolute perfect choice to play Tony Stark. Now with Ed Norton Jr. as the Hulk, they apparently want to cast an unknown to be Thor, but Capt. America has to be the clincher. He has to be a perfect foil to Iron Man, as the two of them are both in the Avengers together as well as the leaders of the two different groups of heroes in the comics. It'll be an interesting 3 years from Marvel.

On a side note, did anyone see that Ryan Reynolds is playing Deadpool, and the kid from Friday Night Lights is playing Gambit in the Wolverine movie?

That scene at the end was solid!!

Pretty good movie. I don't think it was great, but it was entertaining.

When Rhodes asked why he was late for his plane, Stark said, "sorry, I was doing a piece for the Vanity Fair.;)
