Does anyone else remember when someone broke into Memorial Stadium & somehow burned the words "SOX SUX" in the infield grass ? I remember being at a night game......I came down from Reading, PA. I think it was in the late 70's....Those were the days when RedSox Nation did not exist ,and only a minimal number of BoSox fans showed up at our home games......anyone care to share their memories ?
NOTICE: THIS IS NOT AN ENDORSEMENT TO TORCH CAMDEN YARDS INFIELD !!!

While not an endorsement, I do think it's a damn fine idea :)

I was 9 years old when it happened, but I vaguely remember.
Here's something I found from Bob Haynie about it:
Here’s a baseball memory for you. In 1980, the Red Sox and Orioles were playing a series at Memorial Stadium. The Saturday game was going to be the national game of the week. Well ,the night before the game, someone-- or something-- jumped the fence and got onto the field. Well, these industrious people used acid--I think--to burn the words “ SOX SUX” in the middle of the infield. Since the powers-that-be didn’t want Baltimore portrayed in a negative light on national television, the grounds crew had to make the S’s look like 8’s. So that Saturday afternoon, as I sat in the upper deck behind home plate with my brother, the middle infield at Memorial Stadium read something like “8O8 8U8”.

Yep, I remember it. In fact, we went to one of the games in that series and the field was all messed up. I'm prety sure it was 1979, right before Orioles Magic started.

rschackleford: Is this classless? Did the conduct result in the reputations of "good" Orioles fans being ruined? Just wondering. Feel free to chime in El Gordo, I'd like to know what you think, too.

Eh, my feathers are still ruffled since rshackleford essentially called me classless and a bad fan.
I'm sure you'd be mildly irritated too.

Not really.
It's a message board.
Once you realize that, your perceptions will change and you won't have irritated ruffled feathers.
Man, are you like this all the time? Do you flip out when someone honks their horn at you in traffic? ;)

ANYWAY, back to the thread topic, I had never heard about this before. This sounds like a pretty cool moment in O's history :)
It's pretty funny to think that somewhere in a Baltimore suburb, someone could be reading this and thinking "Hell yeah, I knew they'd remember when I did that" :)

If laughing at you because you're getting irritated over people on a message board makes me a classless jerk, I don't want to be a classy gentleman. :)

STOP IT!!! I'M GOING CRAZY WITH THE CONFUSINGNESS!!!!
Are you or arenn't you actually arguing, or is it tongue in cheek? Cuz I love me a good argument.
Then again, this "argument" sucks. I want my money back.

I'm not really trying to argue. Since he isn't a Boston fan, I can't display my classlessness in all its true glory.
I'm sorry to disappoint you.

I can pretend to be a Boston fan if it'll make you feel better. Then you can let me have it with both barrels and show rshack and El Gordo how it's done.
The coming of #8 ?????
Good call dude :) Now we just have to figure out what the "O" and the "U" meant!
Why Not?

If I was in the TV booth, I'd have made up a story about the great BOB BUB, who taught Brooksie to field, Palmer to trust his high fastball and Boog how to hit.
"You may never have heard the name Bob Bub before today ladies and gentlemen, but passed away last night showing some pony leaguers how to turn the double play at the ripe old age of eleventy-seven. Now, he's giving pointers in that higher league up in the sky, and some local yokels have burned his name into our memory banks for at least one afternoon. So sit back, relax and keep tuned in for some Orioles baseball..."

So, philosophically, would it be wrong & boorish now to burn "808 8U8" into the field? ;)

Just chant
"Eighty. Eight. Eight. You. Eight!"
We'll all know what it means, but the corporate stormtrooper ushers will never catch wise and eject you.

back to the original topic...
I remember that incident very well. I attended a game one or two nights after it took place. Even though the grounds crew puts X's through all the letters you could easily tell what the original letters were supposed to be. It was a low point in O's fan history. Also, back in 1980 the Sox did suck so it didn't really need to be spelled out. :laughlol:

Cool! This just jogged my memory - I was just a little kid at memorial with my Dad and do remember this incident, but believe it or not, never knew until now what it spelled out.
