Here's how we'll handle this year's coverage on the message board:
First, we'll have a general discussion thread during the draft which will be this thread.
For every Orioles pick, an individual thread will be given to that player where everyone can do their magic and research the heck of the guy.
Opinions, information, links, pictures, videos, it's all fair game in the player's draft thread.
This will be a great way to gather all the information available about the Orioles new draft picks....
I plan on being at the Camden Yards for the draft and will post comments from Jordan and MacPhail in these threads...
I'll be posting a front page draft coverage notice that will point to this forum.
Let's have fun with this. I know I'm looking forward to watching the poer of the Hangout community shine.
So who's taking off work??? :D

The last three years I've been fortunate enough to have off work the day of the draft. Hopefully I'll be as lucky this year. I always look forward to the draft to see what players the O's have selected to help turn this franchise around. Here's hoping JJ has another banner draft.

I'm off now and will be for a couple of months finishing my novel. Lucky me. :D
I'd love to have an ESPN2 draft day party... that would rock! :)
Thanks again Tony, this site is the best around.
When is the draft? I work Saturday mornings, but if it starts around 3 I might be able to catch it. I know the whole thing only lasts about 17 minutes...

Well, tell me, how much does this suck? My son's class is going to NY for their 4TH GRADE TRIP, and I've been asked to be a chaperone. As an incentive, they promise to give you half off tuition until 10th grade in the school, and I need that. Basically, I'm missing the draft, totally and completely. I just learned today. Their hotel has a TV, so I'm going to try and sneak in a few hours to watch it.
I will definitely be watching.

Everyone know's that Hosmer is my #1 guy, so that's how I'd go... but what's really interesting is how the Hangout would react, and who the consensus guy would be. Matusz, Posey, Hosmer, GBeck?

It would come down to Matusz vs. Hosmer. I think most people recognize that GBeckham has holes in his swing and no one really wants to go near Posey.
I dont have to leave for work until 3:30 pm tomorrow so I am excited to get to see the first 10 picks or so.

Is every major site getting direct info from Jordan? I'm still not sold on taking a SP with the 1st pick when we need positional talent.
Smoak is who we need if Alvarez isn't there at #4.

I think they'd have to see significant holes in the top-rated hitters in order to pick Matusz. Otherwise, they feel certain that big hitters are going to slip to the second and 3rd rounds.
I've never really been excited for a baseball draft before, but getting Weiters, etal last year has me geeked up. Go O's!!!! Get it done even better this year, Joe Jordan!!!!

Assuming Pittsburgh does what is expected and takes Alvarez, especially now that T.Beckham is gone, Kansas City becomes the wildcard at the top of the draft. Who will they take? I hope Matusz, just to eliminate the issue when it's our turn to draft. I personally want Hosmer or Smoak and hope Jordan doesn't have to choose between one of them and his top pitcher.

Yeah, but that was before the D-Rays went with Beckham over Posey. With Posey still on the board, IMO the Royals will really think long and hard about choosing Posey over Hosmer.
Awhile back the Royals were also said to be high on Aaron Crow. With the MLB Draft, no one really knows until the pick is made.
I, for one, would not be shocked to see the Royals take Posey over Hosmer. I think it would be the right decision for them anyway.

I agree that Posey will be seriously discussed. However, I think Hosmer is the pick, and KAN will be thrilled to have him and Moustakas developing side-by-side.
Matusz looks bound for BAL and Posey to SFN. Skipworth to FLA, G-Bex to CIN, Smoak to CHA, Alonso to WAS and ??? to HOU? TEX should pony up for Crow.

"The Orioles' pick seems pretty clear unless the Kansas City Royals muck up the works and take San Diego pitcher Brian Matusz at No. 3. I'm guessing they'll take high school first baseman Eric Hosmer instead.
Hosmer is high up on the Orioles' draft board, along with Beckham, Matusz, Alvarez, South Carolina first baseman Justin Smoak and Missouri pitcher Aaron Crow."

Very interesting. I figured they were in on Hosmer as a dark horse but I was thinking they would take Hosmer if the first three played out in some combination of T. Beckham, Alvarez and Smoak. I figured they might like Hosmer over Matusz. Interesting that Roch thinks they'd prefer Hosmer over Smoak. Hosmer seems to have more upside, but Smoak is closer, polished and a huge talent himself.
However, with my 1,000th post I will just leave it at this: regardless of who we pick I feel pretty confident that in about an hour we will have one more excellent prospect to add to the system and hopefully more to follow :)

That seems to be the consensus. I still think there's a significant chance Jordan goes for Smoak, Hosmer is a darkhorse if KC passes, and there's still the outside chance that one of T. Beckham or Alvarez falls into our lap, though that looks extremely unlikely at this point.
KC might even opt for Matusz taking him out of the equation for us. We'll see.

Well Alvarez is unfortunately gone (I was praying he would fall to us). I'll be happy with Smoak or Matusz. 1B/DH is definitely a weakness in our system and, even if we sign Tex, we can still keep Smoak at 1B/DH (wherever Tex doesn't play) or maybe we can even move him to LF. On the other hand, you can never have too much pitching and Matusz would definitely helping our pitching in the minors greatly. We'll see, but either player will be an excellent pick IMO.

Jim Callis sez...
Matusz is a safe bet, great secondary pitches, should move quickly. Should be seeing him in Baltimore in a couple years.
He failed to mention wonderful words like ace, or one.
But he also said he is the surest bet to be an All-Star out of the whole draft.

Why do people act like this is the only pick in the draft? We have quite a few more if I'm not mistaken...

So any pitcher picked in the top 10 is a terrible pick? Its that opinion that is totally stupid, not the pick.
There are a hell of lot top ten pitcher busts than there are top ten #1's out there.

I can understand preferring Smoak, I did myself, but anybody saying that Matusz was a terrible pick is simply being ignorant. He's a tremendous pick.

What an amazing pitching farm system we have now! Tillman, Arrieta, and Matusz are all legit 1-2 pitchers. Then we have Spoone, Hernandez, Bergesen, and Berken all looking to be 3-5 pitchers. This is not even including Liz, Olson, and Penn!
And Butler.

Do you guys think he'll sign with us and play for Bluefield before the start of the Appy League season?

Most draft picks don't make it. Even 1st rounders.

Posey to the Giants.

I don't like this pick. I don't think either Matusz or Smoak are superstars in the making; I think Smoak will be somewhere on the Wally Joyner-Todd Helton spectrum of good fielding 1B with high OBP and 25-HR power, while Matusz if all goes well will be a good 2-3 starter. But Smoak is more likely to reach his ceiling simply because he is a hitter, and the O's need hitting more than they need pitching, all else equal.
A wasted opportunity...the only silver lining is that hopefully it's a signal that we're going to break the bank for Texeira.

Totaly stupid!
The next Chris Smith is one pitch away.
cOULD NOT AGREEE MORE, THIS WILL GO DOWN AS ONE OF THE WORST PICKS THE O'S HAVE MADE. NOT BECAUSE OF THE FACT THAT MATUSZ WON'T WIN SOME GAMES, BUT BECAUSE OF WHO WE DID NOT SELECT: SMOAK

That's great and all, but I don't think frontline starter when I hear Brian Matusz like I do when I hear the name Aaron Crow.Thats the dumbest thing I've ever heard.

Alright, now that we've selected Matusz at 1:4, where do you all see him ranked against our other pitching prospects?
Assuming Liz's ineligibility, I'd say:
1. Tillman
2. Arrieta
3. Matusz

I personally would be much more excited if his fastball sat around 93-96 (like the 1st pitcher taken should) rather than 90-93. I know power isn't everything, but it can make the difference between an "ace" and a #2 starter.

And when I first heard Markakis I thought of Gyros and fetta cheese, are you seriously saying we should draft players by their names?

l Lincecum has outstanding # 1 starter stuff. Matusz does not, that'
s why no one can agree wether he is a # 3 or # 2...

LOL. Was Lincecum a terrible pick for the Giants?
Lincecum was not a number 4 overall pick, and he has a much better fastball and therefore more upside than Matusz in any event.
I don't think Matusz is a terrible pick; he's a good pitching prospect. I just think that the O's need hitting much more than they need pitching, and given our shortcomings in scouting and developing hitters we need to take every chance we can get to acquire polished, proven talented position players.

We've got lots of other picks this year guys.
We didn't waste our picks on silly FA's this past season, and that is gonna be huge now that we will have our second and third round picks, that we didn't have last year.
I hope we sign Matusz quickly so he can get going at Aberdeen. Any chance he could ge to Frederick before the year is over??

Two things.
1. Matusz better walk on water.
2. I hope he has an ERA of 1.00 or less, because otherwise he'll have more losses than wins.
Dumb, dumb, and more freaking dumb.
