It's funny. I've been thinking lately that there are a lot of good, patient hitters who are way down in batting average this year but at or near career-average levels in everything esle... Roberts, Markakis and Millar on our own team as well as guys like Jeter and Ichiro and I think I had some other examples that I can't remember off the top of my head. I know Roberts and Markakis' strikeouts are way up, but I haven't looked at K stats for the others. I think the strike zone has gotten bigger as part of the league's effort to make umpires speed up the game (Dave Trembley has alluded to this situation both before and after he got thrown out the other night). Unfortunately, this effort to speed up the game for casual fans with short attention spans is penalizing fundamentally sound hitting. It definitely seems to be happening more in the AL than the NL for some reason though. That I have no idea how to explain since there aren't separate AL and NL umpires.

It's the veteran influence of Jay Payton.
Also, that was one of those plays where the CF as "captain of the outfield" needs to realize the corner guy is in a better position to make the play and let him take it.

Both. I don't want to see people suffer just because they weren't blessed with oodles of talent. Burres has had stretches where he looked like he could be developing into one of those crafty Jamie Moyer types with staying power despite all everyone says about their stuff. Those are the types of players I root for the most... the ones who make a lot out of a little talent.

I agree, but right now our offense can't handle a Jamie Moyer type pitcher, who battles and gives good innings but gives up 4-5 runs a game.

I'd rather see Burres back in the pen and these innings going to Tillman. I would say Penn but I just don't think he's ever going to get his act together.Jones's defense is starting to wear thin also. It's just gauling to sit here every night and watch other teams make the fundamental plays while we don't. As I type this Jones overthrows a cutoff man.

Yup. Mine crapped out after the bottom of the 2nd and hasn't returned. Also, when I reloaded MLB.com the scoreboard said, "There are no games today." Gameday is still working though. Go figure. MLB.tv has been terrible this year. I think the "premium" business with the 1.2M quality was a big mistake. I don't even have that but the whole website seems to have gone to pot when they added it.

Don't hate him, I just think we have better options than him starting right now, I felt the exact same with Trachsel. We seem like we are always starting out in a hole when they are pitching. It's called paranoia. Every team's fans feel like their team is the only one that doesn't get that done with perfect efficiency. Truth is, most teams don't most of the time. The O's may in fact be below average in that category, but believe me, that rant is universal and it can't be true for everybody.

Nah, he's just lucky he's in :cussing: baseball.
Seriously, I'm a Crowley defender but it does seem to me that this past offseason was probably the time to finally make a change. Not because I think it's all his fault, but just because he's been out hitting coach for years and we haven't had overall success. After some amount of futility, change just for change's sake does start to make a little bit of sense.

I think so. He has been awful in every aspect of the game. Shockingly, defense has been his best part. I would really prefer to see Alex Cintron out there trying to keep his arm from falling off. At least he would keep his head in the game, run the bases intelligently, and maybe occasionally hit the ball with authority.

In all fairness to Ramon, BROB should have tagged him but he simply botched it. He assumed Overbay foot was going to slide into the base where BROB's glove was, but it was a smart play by Overbay to pull his leg up and go high and beat Roberts tag the bag.

He didn't forget to tag Overbay, he put his glove down to make a sweep tag and Overbay didn't get there as fast as he expected. He was a little off balance from going up to get the high throw and may have thought he did tag him. He has had some trouble off and on with applying tags on SB attempts ever since his elbow injury. It may be fear of re-injuring that arm or worse yet (and I do think somewhat possible) he just doesn't have the same sensation in that hand that he did before all the muscle and nerve damage so he may be guessing as to whether or not his glove has actually touched the runner.

his ERA is a big lie, he gives up way more runs than that, just most of the time they are others. Both him and Walker have been huge dissapointments, we need to unload them ASAP.
What is trembley thinking right now? I don't get it...we are giving this game up right now.
I'm glad I'm not in a foxhole with you guys... the smell of wet diapers, uh, I mean pants, would be overwhelming...

Bradford & Walker blow... yet they're making far more than the rest of the BP combined. Not to mention Baez.
Bradford's ERA is deflated because of his typical mop up, 1 out specialist duties.
Bradford has allowed three non intentional walks in 19 innings. Has nine strikeouts, and a GB/FB ratio of 4.6. He isn't pitching that poorly. The argument that relievers shouldn't make as much money as he and Walker do is a much more salient one.

Like I said, mop up duty. He hasn't done great at all in key situations, well the few key situation's he's been in.
Also, important to leave out the 22 hits and only 9 k's. He's just been bad, no other way to put it. I don't remember seeing him one time this year where it's been a simple "boring" inning, so to speak.
