Maybe it is just me but it just seems that baseball video games aren't half as fun as they used to be in the old Nintendo days.
Case in point you used to be able to put these games in and just play. Using just a directional pad and two buttons. Now you have to spend half a day just memorizing all the buttons you have to hit for things like how to turn a double play, along with running the bases. It takes all the fun out of it.
Are baseball games like Baseball Stars, Bad News Bears Baseball, and Baseball Simulator all gone for good?

Thank you!!!!
I have said the same thing for years!
Running the bases is now like learning Street Fighter special moves. It's so complicated.
The game play was mastered with the first RBI Baseball. Every baseball game that came afterward should have stuck with those original directions.
I think by trying to make the games as realistic as possible took a lot of the fun out of it. I know I haven't played a fun baseball game since RBI Baseball 3 for Super Nintendo.

Baseball is supposed to be a reflex sport and to many buttons definitley gets in the way of that.
The Bases Loaded franchise was a pretty good one also. Now that I am traveling down memory lane.

Ken Griffey Jr. Baseball for N64 was a completely broken but awesome game. I still play it with a friend of mine once in awhile. Coincidentally, it is also the last baseball game that came out in which the Orioles were awesome. Playing with the 1997 roster is sweet.

Ken Griffey Jr. Baseball for Super Nintendo...BEST BASEBALL GAME EVER.
So genious in its simplicity...
Gameplay was actually balanced...every game was not a home run derby...but it wasn't too hard to score.
Plus, you can hit the warehouse during the home run derby

You guys should try MLB Power Pros. Despite its cartoonish looks, it is a simple and fun game that reminds me of a cross between RBI Baseball and Baseball Stars. The game is also ridiculously deep. I got it for $20 for the Wii, but they also made it for PS2. I think the new one is coming out in July. There's a thread on it here (http://forum.orioleshangout.com/forums/showthread.php?t=59905).

The best baseball game I have ever played was little league baseball for NES. I loved the "franchise" mode for baseball stars. I was more excited about that game than any other game I have ever gotten.
As far as the games today, they can get too complicated. I have MLB 2K8 and I can't figure it out. I lose games 25 to 8. There are so many buttons and I spend more time figuring out what to do, instead of enjoying the game and getting into the strategy of the game of baseball.

I'm so glad that you guys are talking about this. I like how the rosters are more up to date and I like how you can run a franchise, but that is all I like how the most recent baseball games. Doesn't matter what game it is, the controls are much harder now. I've rented a couple games for my ps2, and I have always had trouble trying to figure them out.

Video games today are for career video game players. You have to spend 40 hrs a week learning to play them and then actually playing them. It's probably the biggest reason why I haven't played a single video game in six months.

Agree with pretty much everything in this thread. My buddy still has a Nintendo hooked up, and whoever gets knocked out first during card games usually goes and plays some RBI baseball. Can't beat it.

I'll second this. It can be as simple or complex as you want. I'm playing somewhere in the middle -- lil' help with fielding, no help with base running, pitching, or hitting.
I think they realized you can only go so far with trying to make the game look 'real' so they went the other way with cartoon-like graphics, but the gameplay feels real. I highly recommend it.

LOL yea Griff is rated 10/10 for every attribute and Jay Buhner looks like a white Incredible Hulk on steroids with a freaking cannon for an arm in RF.
If someone is standing on third and hes standing at the wall, he freaking guns them down at home plate on the fly..hahah
Gotta love it!

Through 30 games in the season, Griffey is currently batting .748 for me :)
He cannot get out...it is almost impossible.

I just started playing this game for the PS2. I haven't mastered the batting yet, but the controls seem easy to do. For $20, it is a fun game to play.
The only drawbacks that I have seen so far is that you can only trade players during the season play (you can always edit players though). That and the fact that they take 5 days to approve trades are the only drawbacks so far. I would get the game.

Mario Super Sluggers is about the closest thing to simplistic baseball I've played lately. It's pretty much directional controls and one button do everything. You can turn off all the weird things like items and bonuses to play just traditional baseball.

MVP Baseball for the PC is the best baseball series I've played and the most current version MVP 2005, has had some total conversion mods for the past two years including the most recent mod, MVP 08 done by the folks at MVPmods.com and EAmods.com. The mod includes up to date uniforms, rosters, stadiums with actual ads including OPACY done by yours truly, lifelike cyberfaces and other things to update the presentation. It really takes EA's game to another level...

My favorite game for the NES was "Baseball Stars". When I could get it to work (always enjoyed blowing in the system and the games) the game was enjoyable.
Favorite game now to play is Power Pros 2008. Controls are pretty easy and for $20, it is a really great buy.

I've been playing MVP 2005 with the conversions from MVPMods.com and your OPACY for about 5 or 6 months now. You did an AWESOME job on the
ballpark. Did you do any of the minor league stadiums? So far I have Norfolk,

My issues exactly. Baseball Stars was my favorite. Easy to play... but of course these kids are growing up familiar with the 'complicated' nature of the controllers, and generally are more comfortable in playing these games.
I used to love playing though... :(

Tony LaRussa 3 for Sega. Loved that game.
Simple to play, with still some little cool details (relievers needing to be warmed up, but who could also over-warm-up).
Only bad thing was the trading system. Well, for the computer...I had a lot of fun trading Mark Smith for Barry Bonds straight-up :laughlol:

I used to be huge into sports games in general. I have played full seasons (all 162 games, no simming) in two baseball games: MVP 2005 (PS2) and World Series Baseball '98 (Sega Saturn). Both were easily the best baseball games of their time, and the argument could be made that MVP 2005 is still the best baseball game on the market.
I had a blast with both games. I've lost interest in video games in general over the last few years, but maybe a new baseball game will come along that will rekindle my desire to pick up the controller again. MLB The Show on PS3 is pretty good, but I just never got hooked on it.

World Series '98 for Sega Saturn is a GREAT game. I have my Sega Saturn at my parents house in Ocean City and never miss a "playoff" run while down there.
I am unstoppable with the California Angels.

I liked Baseball Simulator 3000. I wasn't into the game play as much (missiles and cluster bombs for pitches??? Games played in outer space???) but I liked making a team, deciding on the strengths and weaknesses for my team, setting a simulated season and then waking up to see how they did in a full 162 game season.

The Triple Play and MVP games for PS1/PS2 were pretty great but I agree nothing touches Ken Griffey Baseball.
I tried to play the new, non MVP Baseball games and I just don't like them.
MVP Baseball will be back in like 5 years, I can wait, hell the Orioles might even be good by then :D.
I loved MVP 05. More than was probably healthy. But give me a choice between that and The Show 08, and I'll take The Show.... though they really need to fix the player development engine. MVP nailed that. But The Show's gameplay is so far superior (particularly the broadcast) that it gets my vote by a hair.
Don't even mention 2K.

Agree there. I don't mind most of the 2K games, but the 2K baseball series is just awful. It has a nice look and some nice features, but gameplay is really just awful in comparison to The Show. I understand everyone's comments about gameplay being difficult, and can completely relate. I hadn't played any of the "new gen" baseball games before and whenever I picked up The Show 07 I was terrible at first. It takes a little while to pick up, but once you have the hang of it, they are really solid all around games.

The main problem with the console games is their simulation engines. There are huge flaws with the trading, free agent, and player development logic that essentially break the Franchise mode if you sim enough years.
I think I heard somewhere that one of the games might be looking to plug in a proven simulation engine like Out of the Park Baseball. I think this is a great idea and if it is already being done, why not outsource it and worry about perfecting the gameplay and graphics??

Ken Griffey, Jr. Presents Major League Baseball for SNES is the be-all and end-all of baseball video games. Simple to play and so much fun.
BTW, Griffey wasn't 10/10 in every attribute I believe he was only an 8/10 in speed.
The best offensive club in that game was Texas, best pitching staff (not surprising) was Atlanta.

I really like Out of the Park Baseball (the latest version is 9) - the learning curve is really steep, and obviously text-based management games don't appeal to everyone, but the game is very realistic and detailed. Also if you buy it right now, I think you get a discount because of the holidays.
Just for fun, my current Orioles lineup during the 2009 All-Star break (I started the game before all of our free agent transactions, like signing Izturis)

I would like to see mlb the show or mlb 2k come out with all the full season minor league teams. I think what made me like MVP 05 so much was I could play as the orioles minor leagues as well(frederick, bowie, and at the time Ottawa). Thanks to folks like JTrea and Spungo and the gang at MVP mods and EA Mods I have been happy. Still, the game engine is in serious need of an update. At least 2K has planned a release for the PC of 2K9 for March 3rd (for $20 !?!?!).
What scares me is all of the bad reviews of the 2K MLB games in the past. My only hope is that the 2K9 game will be able to be modded by all the same great people that have kept MVP 2005 going all these years. However, if the basic game mechanics are as flawed as many say the 2K games are, I'm afraid that even great mods will not help.
I'll buy it, but if it stinks, I'm willing to use Total Installer Thingy and keep downloading updates to MVP 2005. Come on JTrea81! Don't stop work on Camden Yards ver 6.0 :)

I think the individual-pitch ratings look interesting. Especially if they add some form of being able to "teach" a pitch.
Yeah thats another good feature. Easier to understand what is standing in a prospects way from being ready.

Well you have done a fantastic job with OPACY 5.5. IT IS AWESOME! The first thing needed in 2K9 is to replace all those $Pepsi$ and $State Farm$ ads I have seen in the trailers. I am worried more about the basic gameplay. I thought the Canucks on MVP 2005 PC pretty much nailed it.
