Maybe that's because even he knows they are going to hit him. I just can't make myself believe that DC is ever going to get it and live up to his talent.

I personally disagree. If he didn't hit any Red Sux in that game a few weeks ago, then I don't see why he would hit a Pirate in this situation.

Cabrera needs to mix up his pitches a little. When you know old #1 is coming 90% of the time it's not that hard to hit it. What happened to his slider, and didn't he have a change up earlier in the year?

Daniel only knows one thing - throw it hard. Sure, he has other pitches, but he lacks confidence in them. He needs to be forced to throw him. Right now, he is pitching like a lot of high schoolers I have seen - throw it hard and hope they miss.
So, does Bynum get plunked leading off the next inning? I hope so, because I'm still waiting to see him dropkick somebody like he promised.
Nope, got frozen up on the deuce.
Maholm has some nice movement on all of pitches today according to Gameday.

I don't think that's it. I think his FB isn't doing what it did before. It's like last-year's FB. It's flat and they're hitting it.
I think he's trying to do something, instead of just doing what he does best.

All very true but he needs to look back and see that he is more successful when he mixes it up. He should have realized by now that the old chuck and duck routine isn't working out.

Yes but you have to agree that he is throwing nothing but fastballs? The hitters need to be kept off balance just a bit I think. Like I said earlier they know what's coming and are teeing off.
But I do agree with you about his fastball. It doesn't have the movement it used to have.
He just threw two sliders and a change to Wilson.
RipkenWay
06-15-2008, 02:34 PM
He just threw two sliders and a change to Wilson.
Well maybe he is learning. :D
Actually I went back and looked, he threw all FBs in the first and every inning after he has thrown at least one secondary pitch to almost every batter. Not all but almost all. He even threw a couple of first pitch sliders (for strikes too).

That was some smart pitching by Maholm to get Salazar. He did what we've been complaining D-Cab can't: mix the breaking stuff in with fastballs so that the batter doesn't know what's coming.
On another topic, don't you think Bynum's looked good at short today?

He was in jams 4 innings, and he got out of them 3 times... just that 1 inning with a crooked number.
Not saying that inning was OK, it wasn't, but DCab is really good at getting out of jams, even on a bad day. When folks critique him (which is fine to do), they should remember that. It's been true for years now, but almost nobody notices.

I think it was his wildness today that has some people scratching their heads, and the fact he has not had a "dominate" start in a while.

Yes, this is very true. This has been the thread that has kept DCab afloat. The fact is, to be good at getting out of jams, you have to be in a lot of jams. He puts himself in said jams. But his ability to get out of tough situations is a big part why he's a guy I think we should keep regardless. You can pretty much count on DCab to at least give you a shot.
I'll certainly take it. It's always fun watching DCab... I don't know if fun is always the word, maybe interesting or suspenseful work best. Hanging on the edge of your seat, pumping fists when DCab wiggles his way out of danger.

Oh well, at least we get to find out who plays SS. I'm really rooting for Guthrie. He's the best available fielder who's not needed at another position.

I guess Salazar to SS and Scott to first.
Or maybe Adam plays short.
We'll see. I just love how Trembley doesn't care the outcome, he tries to get his best hitters up there. Perlozzo never would have hit for Cintron with not antoher SS on the bench.

Wow.
Not a bad idea, unless Payton's spot comes up again.
Who is our best hitting pitcher should that spot come up again? Guthrie? Maybe Albers? Where's Loewen when you need him?? ;)
Payton tries to go back to back with a pitch at eye level, then bunts at a pitch in the dirt. Way to keep the momentum up!
Now, who plays SS?!
I KNEW B-Rob wasn't going to let us down!! I just thought it was giong to be another double. Wow, for someone who doesn't hit that many homers, he comes through with the big ones, doesn't he?!
Yeah, it took Payton a few pitches to calm down and concentrate on the actual pitch at hand. Note that he's been pretty good dunking outside breaking stuff into the opposite field the last two at-bats. He's also hustling well.

OK, it's Salazar at short. Put the utility guy (who's pretty marginal defensively at the corners) there. How boring. Please don't let us lose this on a grounder to short!

Seriously, this is becoming probably the #1 frustrating mistake Trembley makes. Johnson has spent most of his career as a starter for crying out loud, let him pitch more than one inning! You can always rest him later.

That wd have been thinking outside of the box and DT doesn't do that when it comes to Johnson and Sherrill. Just remember that Perlozzo wd have probably lifted JJ after one inning (or one inning and a dropped pop-up).

I don't understand the decision to bring in Sherrill. He'd pitched two nights in a row and was gassed. You have two fresh long relievers available (Cormier and Albers). Why not use one of them?

But you also don't stick to a formula if it means taking out someone who is pitching very effectively and capable of going multiple innings when you don't know how long the game is going to go on and your BP is already one guy short. He could have always brought in Sherrill later if we had gotten to an actual save situation.

No, I think the play at home is to use your closer in the 10th and try to win it in the bottom half.
The question is how gassed was Sherrill? Apparently quite.

That is the conventional wisdom, but when you've got the setup guy in their steamrolling the opposition and your bullpen is one man short, I think the best move is to keep the setup man in.
