I'd like to know what movies you all think ruined one of your favorite franchises. Anything goes here be it comic books, video games, short stories, or novels.
The one that always makes my blood boil is how the whole Silent Hill franchise was ripped apart. By one French director and one Hollywood writer who had to put their own stamp on the franchise, basically mutlilating the story(which was a good one). Turning it into something no one could really understand or follow, veterans or greenhorns.
It even had actors I really like in Rhada Mitchell and Sean Bean. And I still hated it.
All I can hope is that in a decade or so when everyone forgets about this abomination. Someone will stay true to the story and try again.
So what is the franchise that got ruined for you?

Ths X Files: I Want to Believe
It's so awful I'm tempted to give up on buying and watching the episodes I haven't seen.

I think most of us have already forgotten Silent Hill.

The movie when viewed on its own merit was ok. But when met with the expectation that they would actually follow the story. It really disappointed me.
Cool thread.
Suikoden 4.
The Matrix sequels.
TMNT 3.

The Matrix sequels.
Absolutely. They seemed to go in a strange direction after the first Matrix.
Im not sure if this qualifies, but the new Indiana Jones movie was a head-scratcher to me. Im baffled as to how Spielberg and Lucas ever approved that script.

Batman and Robin, FTW.
Or Superman Returns. Though I didn't hate it. Just thought they didn't add anything.
And X3.
And Smokey is the Bandit.

I've often tried to sit down and write a fan-fic script for a part IV to the Godfather franchise, but trying to pick up after Part III is both useless and nearly impossible to do unless you create a new cast of characters, so I will say Part III even though I do enjoy the movie.
I also thought KotCS probably killed any hopes of an Indiana Jones up-start franchise. And I don't care much about the Mutt character, so don't go there.
I also thought Live Free or Die Hard took a character grounded in real life and made him into a superhero.

Yeah I agree. It was cool b/c it was Indiana Jones. But it really was an odd plot and to me did nothing to add to the series.

B & R didn't do anything for me either. I thought they way the did Mr. Freeze was too cheesy.

X3, really? It was not as good as the first two in terms of story or character by any means, but I thought it was at least entertaining in a summer blockbuster, mind numbing, stuff blowing up sort of way.

I actually like Batman and Robin, but have never been able to watch the entire movie beginning to end of Batman Forever. Plus, the last two Batman films rank as some of my favorite movies of all time, so obviously that franshise is alive and well.
Although Spidy 3, Die Hard 4, Indy 4, and Superman Returns didn't live up to the franshises, I still very much enjoyed those movies, so they don't count either.
I thought Jason X was the death of the Friday series, but Jason vs Freddy I enjoyed a lot.
Rocky 5 was a killer, was then Rocky Balboa revived the franchise.
So, as of right now, the only one I can think of that truly killed a series for me is Naked Gun 3 and a third.

I didn't hate it, but it sure killed the franchise. They dumped a whole buncha storylines in a pile and didn't bother to do much with them. And, you know, killed at least one major character.

Unless he just really likes that sort of thing on it's own merits (http://digitalpimponline.com/strips.php?title=movie&id=23).

I'd have to say, Terminator III Rise of the Machines didn't do any favors to the franchise, although I will say I do enjoy the Sarah Conner Chronicles, probably more than I thought I would.

Hardbodies 2. What were they doing in Greece anyway? And why didn't they bring back any of my favorite characters?

Spider Man 3 was a massive disappointment to me and I don't want them to make any more in the future.
If the Rocky franchised ended in Russia things would've been great, but then there was that 5th one.....

I was really dissapointed with the sequels to the Crow. Straight to video material, real crap. Too bad Brandon Lee's life was cut short before things took off:(
On a side note, Lost Boys: the tribe is just dog poop. Why deos hollywood keep delivering these fast food of crappy sequels. Why do I keep renting these films (I know they will suck)???

Was never a fan, but based off of what I've heard, the new movie would have been much better like this. (http://digitalpimponline.com/strips.php?start=0&title=movie)

Jaws 3 and Jaws 4 were awful movies. Jaws 4 possibly top 10 worse movies ever.

I'm wondering how people think MULTIPLE movies could ruin a franchise. Take a stand people!
I liked all the matrix movies.
Batman and Robin I agree with as a ruiner.
New one: I refuse to see the entire Mighty Ducks III movie. I saw about ten minutes and that was enough.
Mighty Ducks was great. D2 was even better.

Revenge of the Nerds 3: The Next Generation - They should have quit while they were ahead.
Back to the Future 3: Not that it was horrible, but it was no where near as good as the first 2 and you can't really go anywhere from there.
T3: As much as I adore the franchise, and I liked the movie ok because of what it was...it was just too over the top and had no direction, whereas the 2nd left it wide open. Thank god for the Sarah Connor Chronicles and the new movie.
XMen 3: It wasn't awful, but they just ignored storylines, killed off too many characters (I'm guessing in an attempt to go with different people and save money), and they should have gone with the Sentinels instead of Dark Phoenix.

I agree that it wasn't awful, but they definitely pick and choosed. What they wanted to focus on. I mean night crawler was like a huge part of the 2nd film and he's not even around at all for the 3rd??? I also don't like how Cyclops got killed off screen. I never was too happy with how they handled the Cyclops character for the whole trilogy either.

Agreed! For the guy that is supposed to be the leader of the Xmen, he got pushed aside as the whiny BF the entire series and was just a supporting guy. And then at that, Nightcrawler, but no Gambit? WTF I say. Might as well as had Jubilee as the main character in X3. (Although I will give them that Ellen Page as Kitty Pryde and her line to Juggernaut was PRICELESS). But then Rogue losing her powers and walking away??? Prof. gone???
There were so many ways they could have gone. They could have done the Mr. Sinister/Cyclops/Jean route. They could have given us Sentinels. They could have done age of Apocalypse. <sigh> wasted opportunities....

Back to the Future 3: Not that it was horrible, but it was no where near as good as the first 2 and you can't really go anywhere from there.
Two and three were made at the same time, so it's really hard to say one ruined the franchise and the other didn't when they are essentially halves of the same film.
I think people think poorly on the third one because the second one was so poorly received. IIRC, the third one underwhelmed at the box office because people were only six months removed from the second movie which they felt was too dark and didn't like.
Kinda the same thing that happened with the third Matrix movies and Spielberg's movies that immediately followed AI.

I enjoyed T3. It is a good movie on it's own, far better than we had any right to expect without Cameron's involvement. That being said, the path of the franchise was changed. While the second one had the message, "There's no fate but what you make," the third one said that fate is predetermined and unavoidable.
Assuming the sequel was inevitable, what was the alternative? Anything else would have been derivative of T2.

I forgot 2 and 3 were made at the same time, that is actually worse for me because I loved 2, it was my favorite of the trilogy. I wonder if the 7th Harry Potter will suffer the same fate since it is also a 2-half movie and coming out 6 months from each other.
Yeah, I agree t3 wasn't bad, it was just like you said, taking things on a new path, and the path had been carved out for 2 movies over 15 years before 3 comes along and tra-la-la's it into this whole different course. It was the little things in the mythology that I didn't like, but its one of if not my favorite franchise of all time, so I'm going to be harsh. Like having the hot TX as the bad guy in 3, when it seems like she is a step backwards from the T-1000. That and doing the movie without Sarah Connors seems just wrong, and was missing something that she brought to the table I felt. Last one, was just casting...come on...Claire Danes? ugh.

You mean unintentional comedy like in the first "Dawn of the Dead" movie? That movie probably would have scared me as a kid like "Omega Man" did. But the first time I saw it was as an adult and the acting and script were so bad I couldn't help but laugh.

Anything after the first Saw movie.....
Mortal Kombat II... the first one was okay.
(/hide before saying it) Lord of the Rings, The Return of the King. Too much, OMG moments complete with thirty minutes of same-sex hobbit loving.
Harold and Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay.... the first movie was hilarious but it was not great and didn't need a sequel.
