It's good to see that 67-year-old defensive stalwart Castro is not in the lineup, but a true shortstop in sort of his prime Cintron gets the start.
I'm a fan of this Sunday lineup as Jones and Hernandez get a day off, and that Fahey guy is on the bench too, can't forget him. Has Payton played in CF much this season?
Definitely need another solid outing by Cabrera, not a 3-inning, 7-run performance. Not against the M's.

What about Cintron's arm, range, instincts, or reliability with the glove make him a true shortstop? Roberts, Mora, Jones and probably Jeremy Guthrie are all better shortstops than he is defensively. And no, that's not a compliment to any of them (except Guthrie since he's never actually played SS professionally).

Only the few games Jones has gotten off - about half a dozen. You really can't afford to have him out there much more than that. With him being on the slow side for a CF plus getting poor jumps most of the time and Scott not being particularly speedy or good at tracking the ball in LF you have a big hole in left center, not to mention no hope of a throw successfully making it home from CF. As for the "Sunday lineup" I wish Trembley spread off days around more, particularly making use of the weekday day games if he wants to use day-after-night games to rest people. If you're only going to sit your catcher once a week (which is a bad idea in and of itself for a lot of reasons), no other offensive players should need to get their days off on the same day he does.
Definitely need another solid outing by Cabrera, not a 3-inning, 7-run performance. Not against the M's.
That's the understatement of the year. Hopefully he can build off what Guthrie and Olson have done the last two nights. Unfortunately, it seems to me like Daniel pitches better when they other starters have been struggling than when they're on a roll. That's probably just total coincidence though. I doubt he's really somehow able to focus better just because he knows the team desperately needs him to be a stopper. On the other hand, he's pitching on borrowed time since his suspension is on appeal, so maybe the injustice of all that will be added motivation for him.

Could we win 2 straight Sunday games?
The pen should be rested. If we could get a solid 7 innings by DCab, that would be great for our pen! They've basically had a 3 day break. If we only make them 2 innings (plus 2/3 by Cormier) over a 4 day span, that would be huge for saving our pen.

Guys, appeal at third! The M's broadcast showed Reed's foot simultaneously with the catch and he very clearly left before the ball was in the glove! :angryfire:
The Orioles NEVER appeal that the runner left early on sac flies and I think teams are aware of this because they tend to leave early against us.

No, leaving the base before the ball is caught is Bush League. I have seen plays overturned in the Majors before, as they should be when the guy's two steps toward home when the ball hits the glove. Leaving early is cheating and it's the other team's responsibility to put pressure on the umps to keep them honest.

Is it just me, or does Luke have an extraordinarily slow first step when he starts running? On that play it looked like he was in quicksand. I'm not saying the play was Samuel's fault, but perhaps he should be aware of a weakness like that in a runner and instruct him to take shorter leads than other runners.

Interesting. Miller's strike zone seems to be a few inches to the left (his right) of most umpires'. He definitely calls more pitches on the inside to lefties and fewer on the outside. That definitely worked to Brian's advantage, but Nick and Aubrey need to make the adjustment next time up.

Excellent. I was also thinking about the parsley and a touch of cilantro. Probably going to go with a chunk of french bread vs. saltines. I know this is blasphemy in the mid atlantic, but I'm not that keen on Old Bay. Never got into it. I'd be more prone to some paprika and a little celery salt.

This is the first I've heard of this. Though I'm not surprised I'm hearing it first from you. Do you really believe it?
All I know is, Brian is taking a LOT of called strikes that are low and well off the outside corner. Numerous at bats that would have been walks or good hitter's counts in the past are now called strikeouts or he's behind in the count and forced to swing at a bad pitch in that particular location. I can't say for sure that it's intentional, but in his case there definitely seems to be a pattern of umpires calling strikes well off the plate on the low outside corner when he bats left handed, and catchers setting up well outside the strike zone in that direction and still getting the calls. It's as if the pitchers know the strike zone is expanded right in that area. Someone posted a chart of pitches to different hitters and the results a couple of months ago that showed a clear and unusual pattern of low and outside called strikes against Roberts, but I lost the link (anybody know how to find it again?). I haven't really watched enough at bats to know if other players named in the scapegoat report are having similar problems, so that part is just my troublemaking nature... although I wouldn't be shocked if that had something to do with it.
The really odd thing, however, is that as far as I can tell this is only happening when Brian hits left handed. He's getting a relatively fair strike zone from the right side and having by far his best year ever as a righty hitter (.306/.380/.496), which masks the problems he's having from the left side (.278/.363/.457) a little bit. The shift in his splits has been pretty profound, and as someone who does watch his at bats very carefully, the called strikes low and outside are a major part of his reduced BA and OBP from the left side.

I don't think Scott has a very strong arm at all. As a matter of fact, He's one of the guys, along with OJ Payton, that kind of make me wonder why they play professional baseball in the first place. It wasn't a perfect throw but it was certainly good enough. For whatever reason, Cintron didn't even see it. He just didn'nt react at all to the ball. Some great defense by Roberts this inning but no payoff. The glove flip didn't work too well on the other play where he had enough time to take it with is bare hand and flip it.

I just re-watched it.
He was running towards the bag, with his back to the bag. He had his glove at his chest ready to catch the ball. He couldn't get a feel for the bag from the angle he had to take to get there. As soon as he glanced down for a split second, was the same time Roberts threw the ball. And he threw it with a little mustard for how close they were and it was coming in at a downward motion.

Cintron's glove was down at his side and he wasn't in position yet. On a close play like that you can't stand around and wait for the guy to get set to take a perfect throw. He threw it at the middle of his body where there should have been no question whether he'd be able to catch it or not. A major league shortstop has to be able to catch that ball, period.

Anyone else but Brob throws that ball and you are not so quick to defend. IT is pretty obvious that you didn't re watch the play because I saw the damn thing happen. I saw Cintron look down for the bag to make sure he was in position at the same time Roberts threw the thing. It wasn't any one's fault there, it was a tough play for both of them and it wasn't made.

Yes, my TIVO verified that the ball hit his belt buckle.
You're inventing difficulty out of nothing. Who cares where Cintron had his glove? This isn't target practice where BRob gets points for hitting the bullseye.
BRob somehow managed to make a toss that hit the guy in his freakin' belt buckle, and you're acting like it's some hard effort to catch it.

I will give you this, the two of them do not have good timing or communication. However, Roberts is the far, far superior defensive (not to mention offensive) player, and has done quite a good job of adjusting to all the other shortstops they've run out there this year. He is clearly much more comfortable with all of Fahey, Castro, Hernandez, Bynum and even Eider Torres in his limited duty where he was playing out of position. He is also not the only second baseman to have communication problems with Alex Cintron in his career (a couple of Diamondbacks fans have posted things about him frequently getting into collisions or near-collisions, and he's had a couple with Roberts already). Cintron is slow getting into position, tentative, and just doesn't have good instincts or reflexes. He's a terrible excuse for a shortstop, and he keeps getting worse now that his physical abilities are starting to escape him. The solution is quite simple. Do not play Cintron at a position he can't play. In other words, don't play Cintron.
Sorry for the rant, I'm just so tired of disasters EVERY time he plays in the field!

Yes, it is hard, but being a Major League shortstop is supposed to be hard. Cintron has shown over and over and over again that he's almost never up to the task. A bad play like that can happen every once in a while, but when it's the norm rather than the exception, you've gotta stop playing that guy at the most difficult position on the field.

It is hard when you look down for the bag the same time the ball is thrown and it is not on target.
You guys are acting unreal at this point.
Oh, stop.
He's a ML SS, it's his job to know where 2B is, and to also know where he is in relation to it.
It's not like 2B is drawn on the dirt with invisible ink and he needed secret decoder glasses to find the dang thing.
Jeez...

That run should pretty much seal it. Flat Breezy has to get into tomorrow's game regardless. He's now gone 5 days without pitching...

You can share your opinion on the play, I will have mine.
Sure he knows where the bag is supposed to be and where he is playing. But that play, being behind second base, was a very tough one.
I mean hell, I am playing 2b right now in my league and I know how hard it is for BRob to get to those balls. He is a very good defensive second baseman. I just think that play was very tough for both players and it isn't as cookie cutter and everyone is making it out to be.

What was with that DP? Cintron fielded the ball, came to a complete stop momentarily, ran a few steps toward 2B and then finally flipped it to Brian. I'm not quite sure how they managed to overcome that waste of time and still complete the DP. Beltre must not have been running hard. There is rarely even one play with Cintron where he manages to look like a competent, confident Major League SS.

I don't know what trying to prove, but everyone here understands he is a below average SS.
But the flip didn't take as long as you are saying it did, and he was a perfect throw to Roberts. Cintron had to wait for the ball to get to him so that he could field the thing cleanly. It would have taken just as long for him to throw the ball overhand there.

Why is DT not PH'ing for Quiroz or Cintron?

Who would you like to see up?
Maybe Jones really does need a day off?

X-rays taken on Jones' ankle today were inconclusive. The Orioles have scheduled a CT scan for tomorrow in Anaheim...Per Roch

Well that's not good. We can't survive too many games with Payton in CF, Cintron at SS and Ramon at C (although he wasn't there today). Even if Brian were literally perfect, those three would guarantee us of having the worst up the middle defense in the history of baseball.

By the way, you're right. Computers do what you tell them to, otherwise they'd do nothing.
