I watched it tonight for the first time, and I got all teary-eyed. :(
Anyone else have a similar reaction?

I didn't see the movie, but it was one of my least favorite books of all time.

Did you just not like the book? Or was it because one of the main characters died?

It was an excellent movie, and one of the most poorly marketed ones I've ever seen. Yes, the eyes teared up a little bit.

Yeah I got a lil misty eyed myself. My wife teaches English for MCPS and teaches this book every year, but I watched the movie without reading the book, and the tragic scene caught me completely by surprise.

Nope, I just hated the book. I thought it was a waste of time.

A day later and I'm still bummed about this movie. :ohlord:

I thought it was a pretty bad movie that really only got any good criticism because of its false advertising campaign. I feel like a lot of people like it simply because they were expecting some shallow Harry Potter rip-off, and instead they get the completely unexpected surprise. But after that actually happens, everything is just awkward, underexposed, underdeveloped, and not really well-acted... the entire last act could work in a novel where we have a narrator, but it apparently just wasn't adapted well (I haven't read it). I really don't like the kid who plays the boy... I'm not saying it should've been a huge emotion-fest but throughout the entire movie he just seemed to be going through the motions. This movie just made me angry, really.

No, it wasn't adapted very well at all actually...the book is much better. The movie was a bit rushed, and the acting wasn't very great, but the twist really shocked me in a kids movie like that. I haven't seen anything come out of the blue like that since My Girl.
