At what point does the front office step in and say no? This is absurd. He has the possibility of a career-ending injury if he plays this season.

I think this says it all.

He's acting stupid, and the team is being selfish and enabling his stupidity.

It really is.

I blame the Chargers more than the Merriman himself but does he think some team is going to give him a huge contract knowing he needs surgery?

Who knows what he is thinking. The Chargers are apparently happy with this decision and will give him tons of credit, but as some former players have said, if his numbers go down, or his injury situation gets worse, suddenly the team won't have your back anymore. It's rather screwed up imo.

Yeah, knee injuries are nothing to mess around with.

I wish I had more people telling me not to play with a torn ACL.

Oh yea...The Chargers need to step in and say, sorry you can't play.

I blame them much more than Merriman.

It's one thing to be a tough guy and play through an injury, but you sort of need ligaments in order to move your legs.

The Chargers don't care. He's a piece of meat like every other NFL player, and these pieces of meat get moldy real quick. They don't have the patience for players to sit out full seasons, so they could care less.

Not to get a bad rep here or anything but I think it would be ironic if after all the warnings he's had about his situation, that he finally hurts it doing his stupid "Lights Out" dance after a sack.

It made me chuckle just a bit and I find out that I'm slightly evil, I'd more say Chaotic Neutral.

oh god stop me now

What exactly was the point in him having four doctors look at the knee, only to ignore their unanimous advice? He's a blockhead.

Totally agree, he was just looking for 1 of them to give him the answer he wanted but none of them did.

Stupid decision by Merriman, but as others said, even dumber decision by the Chargers for letting him play. Are they insane? He's only in his 3rd year...young guy...leader of a young talented defense. This team will be great for years to come with the good young talent it has, no need to risk it all for this 1 year.

SD probably has the most talented young roster in the league. This is beyond insane to risk his career for this 1 year. If they don't win the super bowl...than this experiment is a huge failure.

Unless he plans on pumping in the steriods again this year I don't see how this is gonna work.

A league insider raises a great point regarding the potential impact of linebacker Shawne Merriman’s decision to continue to play despite having two torn knee ligaments.

“Don’t think the next player that has a pull or tear won’t be reminded by his coaches that if Shawne Merriman is still producing for his team with two torn knee ligaments, you should be able to play through [it],” the source opined.

...

But there’s still hope for every other player who’ll be pressured to play through potentially serious injuries. As the source said, “The best thing that could happen for every current and future player is if Merriman’s knee snaps like a twig and puts the Chargers on the spot.”

You know, the last part is a little, um, blunt, but it's a good point.

Its the truth; If he gets through the season and is even mildly productive, everyone will say forget surgery. If he doesn't, the chargers will look like an awful organization for letting him play.

It wont last long... it will give out during the first game doing damage to the other ligament, Meniscus, Cartlage etc etc

You are guys are going to jump all over him just because he got the opinion of 4 doctors, they all agreed, and he did the opposite? ;)

If someone falls on his leg wrong, or he turns his leg wrong, or he slips on wet turf, or he twists his knee doing that ridiculous dance...it's lights out for Lights Out.
