View Full Version : Your Super Band!

Name your Super Band! Pick one singer, guitarist, bassist and drummer.

Obviously you wouldn't put Otep Shamaya and Dave Keuning in the same band. You would have to be able to picture the group performing. It can be a stretch but I don't think you can go absurd. You can however use some who have been in the same band before.

Singer: Neko Case. I love her voice and she is pretty versatile.

Guitarist: Johnny Marr. The Smiths, Modest Mouse.

Bassist: Jay Bentley. Bad Religion.

Drummer: John Stainer. Helmet and Battles. This could be a stretch but he has been in the experimental band Battles so I think I'm safe :p.

Singer: Michael Jackson (1983 version, not today's tragedy)

Guitar: Eric Clapton

Bass: Nathan East

Drums: Steve Gadd

Clapton's my favorite guitarist, but not the best choice for this band if Michael Jackson's fronting it. Whatever. The possibilities are endless.

Cool thread. I love Neko Case's voice too. So much emotion in it.

Anyway, I'd go as follows...

Lead Singer: Jimmy Gnecco (from a band called Ours. Amazing voice. Gets compared to Jeff Buckley endlessly and there is also some early Bono flavor to his voice too. Can scream with the best of them)
Lead Guitar: Jonny Greenwood (from Radiohead. Probably the best guitarist today and best movie scorer of tomorrow. Have you heard the soundtrack from There Will Be Blood?)
Bass: Not too familiar with bass players so I will leave this one blank.
Drums: Matt Barick (from the Walkmen. Amazing energy and sound from a little guy).

Great set of pipes on that guy.

Hmmm...

Lead singer - Three way tie - Robin Zander/ Steve Marriott/ Eric Carmen. Don't let his crappy solo work confuse you. Carmen was amazing in the Raspberries.

Guitar - Steve Cropper. Look him up. :D

Bass - Eh. Whoever's walking by. Unless Entwistle can come back to life.

Drums -

You know what? Just Booker T and The MG's, with Al Jackson back from the grave, fronted by one of those singers. That'll do.

Singer/bass: Macca. As long as he signs a release forbidding him from writing lyrics.

Guitars: Rhythm: Keith Richards. Dual leads: Bob Quine and Richard Lloyd.

Drums: Tough call. I'll go with Grant Hart. Excellent songwriter, and can share singing duties with McCartney.

At their respective peaks, I think this lineup would kick up a fairly excellent racket ... and consume boatloads of heroin.

Everyone in the band with the ability to sing. Share the duties a little.

Sorry for cheating a little, I had to add a 5th member.

Well my supergroup would vary widely depending on the specific type or genre of music but I think this mixture would work very well together overall:

VOCALS: Otis Redding. I absolutely love his soulful voice. My favorite R&B singer of all-time.

DRUMS: John Bonham. I think there are many better drummers overall, but Danny Carey, Neil Pert or Gavin Harrison would not work well with this group. Therefore I'm going with Bonham here. I think he'd fit in well with the old school soulful R&B type sound this group would obviously be playing.

BASS: James Jamerson. Nobody in history has been bassist of more #1 hits. Best basically unknown bassist ever and forerunner of the modern bass player. You know that guy that played bass for all the Motown hits? This was him.

GUITAR: Jimi Hendrix. I can't even imagine some of the stuff he would've put out had he not met an early end. Possibly the most influential guitarist ever and certainly one of the more experimental.

PIANO/KEYBOARDS: Jimmy Smith. One of my favorite Jazz pianists ever. Can break it down doing straight up jazz, although I prefer his funkier stuff, but can also break out in the Classical style with effortless perfection.

What I would give to hear these fellas jam out together.

Absolutely. What's not to like?

I love the fact that all of these immense talents sat down and wrote these simple, great pop songs. No egos, no musicianship, just a bunch of guys hanging out and writing songs and having a blast doing it. It's like the exact opposite of what you would think would come from a "super group". Except that it's about the most "super" group of musicians you could ever find recording together.
