View Full Version : Fire Fridge

One of the most pathetic displays of MD football I have ever seen in my life tonight against MTSU.
Where do you start? Same old predictable, boring, vanilla offensive playcalling that gets us no where. The only time Heyward-Bey touches the ball he goes 80 for a score, so what do we do? Not get him the ball the rest of the game of course.
Defense, are you kidding me? I would fire the defensive coordinator after this putrid display. MTSU ran the WR screen ALL NIGHT. I mean every other play all game long. So what do we do? Continue to give them a huge cushion, don't play press coverage, or try to get after the QB. Keep giving up 8 yds every WR screen so the D can tire out and stay on the field all game long.
MTSU WR's can't beat our corners or safeties deep, they failed to the few times they tried. We never dared the QB or WR's all game to this.
Fridge has absolutely no balls. Turner was stinking up the joint. He provides nothing to this offense. Portis at least adds another dimension to the offense, we don't know if he has the accuracy yet because Fridge won't let him pass.
Turner throws 2 horrible picks and has stunk up the joint. What do we do? Leave him in the game while Portis (who was moving the chains and making a few plays) rides the pine. Then Turner throws his 3rd horrible pick in the endzone.
Then in our last play we pull Turner on 4th and 6 (6 I think?) to put Portis in and have him run it into a brick wall for a loss and that's the game!
I'm done with Fridge...Sorry for yelling:laughlol:

As I said in the other thread, I have little doubt that the offense will be significantly better by the start of October.
The guy that really needs to go is Cosh. The points you made about the defense in your post are spot on. Did we have a single sack tonight?

We are now entering year 5 of so-so football under Friedgen... I think he's in defrost mode. His lack of tact in the press recently... and all of the points you made... definitely make me feel like his time in CP is limited.
Highlighting 2 of your points:
- Get the ball to your playmakers! We've got a sick WR... let him make plays!
- Cosh must be fired now. He sucked last year and his bend but don't break LEO oriented defense is horrible. Getting into the backfield is next to impossible.... and... I am told.... not the focal point of the defense. Please. Wake up and smell the coffee, Cosh. Your defensive schemes are useless.
I can't believe the supposedly great football mind of Friedgen would actually allow anything remotely close to this happen.
Pathetic.

If not for 2006, which could have very well been a fluke year, how would people be looking at Ralph Friedgen? Would 5 straight losing season have people thinking that maybe there are better options out there to lead the program?

Here's what I can't understand... and maybe someone could explain this to me.
We get killed by the WV spread for years. Can't stop it.
Everyone who uses the spread is dynamic and dangerous.
Why on this beautiful green earth didn't Ralph go out and get someone to bring it in????????
We are running an ancient offense.
Let me guess. The new field house is full of Brother typewriters.

Too add to this. Not only is Ralph's coaching extremely lacking but his scouting just seems to be gettin worse. My god, he hasn't brought in 1 decent QB since he's been here! Offensive genious?????
All 3 QBs on the team this year are not really D1 material in my mind (undecided on Portis, hasn't got a full chance).
I would take the freaking QB for MTSU, Craddock (sp?), over Steffy or Turner any day of the week and twice on Sundays. He made Turner look like a pee wee league QB today, outplayed the crap out of him (partly thanks to poor defensive playcalling but still).
Also, our kicker is PUTRID. We can't find someone better than this? My HS team kicker was better than this guy. Its the little things also with this team that just tick you off.

Exactly. I think everyone still has visions of Scott McBrien & Co. dancing in their heads. Once that squad was gone, Fridge's tenure has gone steadily down hill.

Yep, his best teams were with the previous coach's players, he's done nothing with the guys he brings in.

Are there any coaches at Maryland that you guys DON'T want to fire? :D

Any coaching candidates out there if we were to let Fridge go after this year?
I'm sure Skip Holtz will be a hot commodity after this year.
I want Mike Locksley, the OC of Illinois.
The guy was a coach here when Fridge was successful, played at Towson, but most importantly, he's been convincing DC's best recruits to go to Illinois.

Is Maryland enough of a step up for Holtz to consider?

Yes I think it is. So much more resources at MD than E. Carolina although they are certainly on the rise.
Probably correct although I suspect Holtz as the hot commodity will have opportunities with much better programs than MD.

I think you pose a good question.
MD is clearly a step up because of their stadium(as in what it is going to be like after the improvements), facilities, conference, better recruiting, etc...
However, is MD enough for him to leave ECU? In other words, is that program good enough for him to leave ECU?
It may not be and, as you said, I suspect a better program will need a coach(Notre Dame if they fail this year?....a Holtz back in South Bend) and he would could choose that program over the Terps.

They could not win a game and they won't fire Weiss. He just got a huge extension.

I would love to have Holtz from ECU, but I can't understand why he would leave there to come here. He's already built ECU to be better than MD.
He could probably get a more prestigious job elsewhere like others were saying. I'm gonna send Debbie Yow my resume and let her know I'm available, what do you guys think my chances are?

Did today's win against ranked California change anyone's opinions about firing Friedgen?
I don't see Friedgen going anytime soon. He was able to turn the team around after the Vanderlinen years. He means too much to the MD fans and other supporters right now. Once the team gets more money from the suites, maybe they would then think about getting a big name to come, but I don't see Friedgen leaving anytime soon.

I don't see him being fired anytime soon, but I can see him having to step down for health reasons if he doesn't get his weight under control. I hope that doesn't sound too crass, but I just can't see how he can keep coaching like that.

My girlfriend was saying the same thing as we were watching the game today. Didn't his father (who was of similar build) die of a heart attack when he was about the same age as Fridge is now? I feel bad judging the guy on his weight, but I'm certain he would have had a head coaching job much sooner in his career if it wasn't for his weight. And for his own sake, and that of his wife and children, I hope he takes serious measures soon. How many 80 year old people do you see that are that size?

Yeah, I can see him retiring in the near future due to his health. I am sure his weight plus his stress level are a deadly combination for him. I can see him getting an office job in a couple years. Retirement will come before being fired.

No, the win doesn't change my opinion on Fridge at all. I feel like Crstoner said in his thread. It makes last week's loss to MTSU hurt even more, because they are capable of hanging with teams like Cal.
I'll give MD credit they won today, I was happy they did. Let's be honest, Cal looked like crap all game until the 4th when they woke up. The cross country flight had to have had some effect on them.
Don't you guys realize that this is what MD does every year?
Start the season slow...play down to the competition and probably get upset once or twice by a team you should beat by 30. Upset 1 or 2 unsuspecting ranked teams. Play mediocre the rest of the year and end up with 6-8 wins. Get into a worthless .com bowl game that no one cares about and repeat the same thing next year.
Fridge said this should be his best team yet, the most seniors he's ever had. I'm gonna have to see a lot more out of him this year to stop calling for his head.

That is a good point. The Terps normally beat a ranked team at home, last year was Boston College, but they still end up losing to a mediocre team. MD is capable of more. Let's just see if they can do well after this victory.
What I don't understand is why they are always putting Portis in as QB and they are doing it just so he can run. I'm all for Chris Turner as QB because he is a decent one, but I think that MD should use Portis as one everyone once in a while. If defensive teams see Portis as a passing QB as well, I think that it can open up the offense more and spread the ball. The run game did look awesome yesterday. Scott and Meggett could be a nice 1-2 punch this season.

I think we got a good indication of this when he overthrew that one pass. Portis doesn't look comfortable throwing the ball.
Heck, even James Franklin noted that he is pretty worried when Portis comes in to the game. Maybe he has the Latrez Harrison syndrome.

I think it (cal game) was a well coached game. They got the ball to their playmakers -- and gave Heyward-Bey several opportunities for big plays. That's how you win on offense.
I'm not so much concerned about Fridge (although I still think some of his press comments about Turner will poor)... I think the real question marks are Franklin and Cosh. I was actually shocked to see the D attacking today... the 2ndary played really well... but I'm still of the opinion that Cosh has underachieved as a coach at Maryland and he is still on the hot seat IMO.
It's too early to tell about Franklin... it is a new offense. But, it showed signs of coming to life and I hope they install Turner as the no. 1 for the rest of season. The last thing we need is a week 5 QB controversy. That would blow-up any rhythm they gain from last to through the next week.

I have no idea why they go into the prevent defense. It doesn't prevent anything.
