I was able to go to the majority of the scrimmage. I did have to leave a little early because my tailgate was calling me ;) Sorry I didn't post sooner.
I'll try to give an impression of each player. Though, this was only the first scrimmage, so it's not really a great indicator of how each player will play this season.
Hayes- Played the point for the whole game. Didn't shoot a tremendous amount. Really seemed to be working on setting up the offense and making smart passes to the bigs.
Tucker- Not a great game for him. He missed a few 3's early. On an inbounds play, he missed his assignment twice and Gary tore him a new one. He seemed a little off his game. A little lost I guess I would say. We know that he can be a pretty good player though, so I would expect him to rebound before the season. Checking the stats, he fairly quietly scored a ton of points though.
Mosely- I was really impressed with Mosely. He was a little off on his shot, but he was always around the basket so I assume he was just having a bad shooting day. He is really athletic and runs the court really well. He's agile, and has a pretty good first step. I would expect him to be our best player in a few years.
Neal- Let's just put it this way, I guarantee that Dave Neal will be the Player of the Year in the NCAA. In all seriousness, he looked like the same old slow and hefty Dave Neal.
Gregory- Really impressive. He ran the court really well and played hard banging around in the post all game. You can tell that he's trying to make an impression and get some more PT this season. If he keeps playing like he did, Gary would have to be crazy to keep him on the bench.
Vasquez- Like always Greivis was playing hard and making turnovers. The difference though, which gives me hope for him, is that he was focus on making the smart play. After he turned the ball over, he would work out how the play was supposed to go on his hand. You can tell that he's really trying to take the next step.
Bowie- He had the same tenacity on D as he did last year. What impressed me most though, was his shooting stroke. At one point he made, I think, 3 threes in a row. I would look for him to step up and take some more shots this year.
Milbourne- He had a fairly nondescript game. Had a few mid range jumpers, got a few rebounds, etc. Nothing earth shattering. Milbourne also quietly scored a ton of points.
Dupree- While he wasn't a good as I had hoped he'd be, he didn't have as bad a game as most said that he did. He had a couple of and 1's. (He missed the free throw on both). He wasn't great on D. Gary is going to have to work with him to get more physical. I think that, at his previous weight, he tried to conserve energy by beign soft in the post. Now, he can run the floor at lot better, so he has to learn to bang down low and get up the floor. You can't take too much from this impression though. It was just the first scrimmage.
Burney- If I was disappointed with anyone in this game, it was Burney. He didn't really fight down low, and he missed a few easy touches in the post.
Goins- Oh boy. So you first see his huge body and think that this guy could be legit. Then you analyze his court sense and forget all about that. He had multiple plays where all he needed to do was go up strong for an easy 2 and he passed it back out to the guards. I do think that he can improve just through getting reps and working hard in practice. I wouldn't expect to see much of him this year, though he could be a factor in years to come.
Pearman- Uhhhhhh, the guy barely played in the scrimmage and will barely play this season (I hope).
Hopefully I didn't miss anyone. As I said earlier, only so much can be taken from my observations from 3/4 of the first scrimmage of the season. That said, I saw some encouraging things. Hopefully I'll be able to go to the other 2 scrimmages and report back again.
