The Yankees need a first baseman but aren't likely to chase after Fielder for two reasons: He is a below average defender and they are going to need first base for Derek Jeter when he re-signs following the 2010 season.

This is the first I have seen of any such mention of the Yankees moving Jeter to 1B. Has anyone seen anything else?

Sounds like speculation on the writers part. I don't buy it though, I can't see the Yankees locking up 1b with someone likely to be offensively challenged in 2011.

I can if it's the "chosen one."

Gotta be speculation. Jeter doesn't have the range either.

Its nice to see Jeter have a slow, steady erosion of skills...he's been on the defensive slope for awhile now....

The Yankees are kind of trapped by Jeter, I think. He's the symbol of modern Yankee greatness, and they won't be able to cast him aside even when cold-blooded logic says they should. In 2011 he'll be 37 and pretty much done, I expect. They'll still have to sign him to a pretty lucrative deal and will end up paying a ton of money for a guy who at that stage will be about as good as B.J. Surhoff was in his 2nd stint with the Orioles.

Pride keeps them from doing the smart thing, having ARod and Jeter switch positions.
