Has any though gone into hosting an IRC channel for the OH? I guess a drawback may be that it pulls discussions away from the board itself, as well as calling for somewhat more active moderation to make sure things don't get out of hand. Still, an IRC channel might be a fun place to hang out during games and whatnot.

We used to have it. You pretty much hit the nail on the head on why we don't have it anymore.
Game threads, and threads in general, fit our model much better in that you can catch up at any time, and you can always go back to a thread. Also, a large part of our community lurks and just reads, believe it or not.
Yeah I never really liked the chat feature. When the game thread is active (ie early in the year before we collapse) it can be very chat like anyway, with the added bonus of logging everything that's been said for the benefit of future readers.

It was very chatty in there (pre-July of course). I hope Shack makes a re-appearance before then because he was always good about stimulating the chat in the game threads with good baseball questions or aggravating people.
