Trying to make the switch back to starter, Danys Baez walked the bases loaded in the first inning after getting the first two outs, and Yadier Molina lined a two-run double down the left-field line.
Pitching coach Rick Kranitz visited the mound before Molina stepped to the plate. Molina ran the count to 2-2 before pulling the ball past third baseman Melvin Mora.
.....
Baez threw 34 pitches, 16 for strikes. He seemed to have good velocity on his fastball, but he was all over the place with it.

Well- that's 3 candidates for the back end of the rotation who have struggled. If I am Hayden Penn, I am loving my chances for finally making the rotation out of spring training. Now all he has to do is avoid a freak injury.

It's tied up per Roch (http://masnsports.com/2009/02/christian-ties-the-game.html):
Justin Christian just crushed a two-out, two-run homer to left field to tie the score, 2-2, in the second inning.

from Roch:
Justin Christian just crushed a two-out, two-run homer to left field to tie the score, 2-2, in the second inning.
Aubrey Huff led off with a single. Melvin Mora popped up and Craig Brazell bounced to second before Christian connected off St. Louis starter Kyle Lohse.
Christian did a Sammy Sosa hop after making contact. Even in this wind, he knew it was gone.
The Orioles are still batting. Chad Moeller walked to bring Nolan Reimold to the plate.
Alberto Castillo allowed a one-out single to Tyler Greene in a scoreless second inning. Nobody is warming up, so Castillo is coming out for the third.

I understand your point. But, my thinking is this. With Tillman, Arrieta, Matusz established as the Big 3; and Guthrie and Uehara holding down the Top 2 (for now); and Hill, Penn and Patton holding a head start; Albers and Bergesen are fighting at best over one future spot in the rotation. Given that, I choose to root for the home grown talent. And, I think that if Bergesen were to overcome all odds and pitch in the majors this year, it's a better "story" than Albers. Just my opinion.

Seems like all of our young guys we like alot have thrown well in their first outing, pumping strikes and not getting into trouble.
All the other guys (Hennessey, Waters, Pauley, Bass, Baez) have struggled.
Holding out hope for Penn!
If we could open the season with a Guthrie, Uehara, Hill, Albers, Penn rotation, that woudl be awesome as a bridge to Patton, Bergy, Hernandez, Berken (maybe) to be the bridge to Arrieta, Tillman, etc.
We're just building bridges all over the place!

Albers threw two scoreless.
Details from Roch:
Matt Albers gave the Orioles two scoreless innings. He threw 26 pitches, 16 for strikes.
Albers' velocity was outstanding. He had more trouble locating the fastball in the fifth inning, but he struck out the last batter he faced, Joe Mather, after falling behind 3-0.
Albers faced the minimum of six batters, striking out one and inducing three grounders.
