I just got word that Pope broke his femur this afternoon. More details as they become available.

Poor guy. I hate to say this, but it's time for Pope to get on with his life.

From a practical point, you're probably right but I think it's a bit premature for anyone to actually tell him this. The kid is 22 years old. This would have been a year where, if he didn't show any improvement, it might have been the end of the road, or at least, the end of his Orioles road. However, I think to tell a kid with his talent to give up his dream because of a broken leg ain't the way to go. This is the second major injury of his young career. I hope he gives it another go when he gets healthy even though his chances aren't very good.

My point is, this was a kid with excellent physical tools but very raw. It was going to take him a lot of experience, coaching and repetition if he was going to become a good player with a shot at the majors. Unfortunately, he's now been set back 2 years due to injuries. So next year he's 23, hasn't played in a year and was last seen hitting .232/.302/.384 and striking out in 1/3 of his PA's at Delmarva. I don't see any way he starts next year higher than repeating at Delmarva, do you?

Ah, I guess maybe that's still young enough to give it one more shot.

Hard to believe this kid is only 22, feels like he's been around forever.

Since he is on the DL there is no hurry to cut him. Let him get healthy then cut him. No reason to make him more depressed than he is at present.

That's too bad. I hope everything works out for him one way or the other. He really needed this season though.

Because that won't make him depressed:rolleyes:

Hey, you like to fatten up the turkey before you go get the axe, don't you?

Seriously, this is indeed probably the end of his Oriole road. I'm sad only because his first name is a different spelling of my son's name and my son doesn't get too many famous namesakes. Oh well.

I guess Kieron may wind up in an independent league if he doesn't quit altogether.

So where are all the "Jeez, I hope he's okay" kind of comments? Does anyone care about him personally, or just whether or not we should get rid of him?

Broken femur? That's a pretty nasty injury, isn't it? As in, sometimes people can't even walk properly after they've recovered?

Ok here mine! :laughlol:
I hope he's OK and he is young and should be able to heal quite fast. As he is most definitely out for the season, I wish him the best for a full recovery for the coming years.

I had a compound fracture in my left femur. It was about two years before I could walk without a limp which is about normal. Of course pro athletes have the best possible doctors and therapists but I would still think at least a year before he could return to any serious training.

How did he get hurt? Does anyone know the details yet?

I don't think we know, but Tony's report says he broke his fibula, not his femur. Which makes more sense and is a bit less serious. Still going to keep him off the field for a while.

I was bracing myself for the Frobby injury response, because the truth hurts. Plus, I hate losing cool name players like Hayden & Kieron. I'm heading into denial & pulling for a miracle !

Any news at all?

Pope broke his leg in spring training when running hard on a ground ball...when he crossed first base, he landed incorrectly and broke the leg. Rumor has it the field conditions were awful, but that's not a surprise at the O's spring training facility!

Thanks for the details of how it happened. However, I was thinking it was at an "away" field as I was not present. Any way we can double-check???

Is he rehabbing with the Orioles?

It was indeed at our "home" park. For that fact, rumor has it some of the opposing teams were using that as an example of why they didn't want to come play at the O's complex.

Thanks for the follow up. Don't know how I missed it.
