I realize this guy is probably a huge reach at #5, but he's a pitcher who's made a huge move up the charts since the beginning of the season. Goes to Lipscomb, same school as Caleb Joseph. Everything I read about this guy makes him seem like just as good a bet as someone like Scheppers or Crow, maybe better. I just watched some video of him on youtube and he looks pretty solidly built. Stuff reminds me of Bedard. He's not a big name but I wouldn't completely rule him out, as he's rising up the charts. Consistent command seems to be his biggest issue. Here's one writeup on him.

Stotle's better at this than I am, so maybe he has something to add here.

He looks to have little touch on his changeup. I think his slider could be quite good. His mechanics look pretty clean. The only thing I don't like is that he closes his shoulders and then swings them back open. That might be where he suffers some of his issues with control.

I like his stuff -- projectable and could definitely play as a mid-rotation starter (front-end if everything falls into place). Knocks? High-effort, sometimes lags in timing (not a huge issue, but combined with high-effort puts extra stress on the shoulder), conditioning/body type, slight wrist cock. Pluses? Stuff is there, quick arm action, hides ball well.

I think he's a first rounder for sure, but I don't know what to make of him. Would he make sense in the pen? Absolutely -- great pure stuff. But he has the pitch mix to warrant keeping him as a starter. There, I question whether or not he 1) stays healthy, and 2) keeps his weight under control.

Now, 2) isn't really a huge issue from a "bust" standpoint -- you could absolutely get your money's worth regardless -- but at 1:5 the whole package just isn't there for me. I put him in the mid-1st to early 2nd, leaning more toward the 21-30 range (I think he probably ends up going higher than that, though).

I think that is what causes issues with his control. Having that backward jerk helps with deception, but it makes it more difficult to firm up on the front side and develop a repeatable release point.

If he is around in round 2 for us, I wonder if we would take someone like him or Paxton or if we would still shoot for a HS arm or athlete. I guess time will tell. From my viewpoint, there will still be some quality college pitching in this round.
