This goes out to the gurus.

Who should we be targeting for Day 2? Obviously Stassi has dropped further than anybody can imagine. While you'd expect the Nats to snag him to start tomorrow, I doubt they want to get snagged up in another difficult negotiation process when they already have their hands full with Strasburg.

I know Trea has been pushing Luke Bailey since 2:5.

Can we get some names to watch for please?

Though it's doubtful due to him really wanting to go college, I would love to get Keyvius Sampson.
This kid has a great outlook considering the troubles he's had.

There are still over 20 BA top 100 guys left including several relievers, SPs and premium OFers.

I like Zach Von Rosenburg out of Louisiana. Seems to have quality stuff, but is held back a bit by some velocity which apparently is coming on of late. Big kid who I think could be a premium talent with a few more mph to the FB.

We'll see how much the scouts are working the phones. Maybe the fourth round will be the new six round and we'll see who wants to sign.

No love for Patrick Schuster? That's the kid who threw 4 straight no-hitters.

To those who know more than me:

Wasn't there some chatter, earlier in the year, this guy might be a solid #2 pick if we missed out on Green?

I liked what I saw of Chris Dwyer LHP out of Clemson. He's a 21 year old freshman, but I liked his athleticism and velocity. He seemed to repeat his mechanics well and he threw 92-94. He may be a guy we can grab in the 4th round and he'll be in the bullpen in two years.

Of the Top 100 left, there is only one middle infielder (Jackson) and one power hitting corner infielder (Malm). We already took a shortstop, be it a HS SS so Jackson would go to Aberdeen if we grabbed him while Givens would be in the GCL. Another poster said that Malm is determined to go to USC and play college ball, even though we saved some money at the top and could maybe throw first round money at him.

Other than that, our system is already stocked with pitching prospects and we are pretty solid as far as outfielders, but it looks like if we snag anybody from BAs rankings, we are bolstering those positions again.

He's a power hitting masher who has enough defensive ability to stick in RF.

The other guy I'd snatch in a heartbeat is Angelo Songco. He would be a terrific addition!

The catchers Stassi and Maddox would be good choices too.

Stassi is my pick if he's there with the 4:5. I love the college bats, but part of me really likes what its hearing about some of the HS arms. I know they are riskier, but that's something about the thought of seeing Hobgood, Bundy, Beal, and a few other 18/19 year old pitchers bursting onto the scene in the next few years, continuing McPhails "grow arms" philosophy.

Stassi hasn't really dropped further than expected, there were better HS catchers out there, there is another one I think has much more upside than Stassi because he has a potential dynamite bat in Austin Maddox. Stassi was just overhyped because he was linked to the Red Sox at the end of the 1st as a need pick, so people thought he was a little better than he was. Remember this is a very deep year for catching.

Bailey should still slide a round or two at least, he's facing serious TJ surgery, will miss part of next year, so he's a 5-6 year project, and who knows how he'll throw after, he may not stick at C because of it if he doesn't rehab well. BIG risk. Hence why I called him out on his Bailey man-crush.

You will get a ton of different names to watch for today, but some of mine are:

Kent Matthes, OF, Alabama
Keith Towne 1B, Angelo St.
Shannon Wilkerson, OF, Augusta St.
Chase Blackwood, C, Valdosta St.
Nate Arevalo, 2B, Cameron
Bryan Marquez, 2B, New Mexico St.
Mark Serrano, RP, Oral Roberts
Luis Coleman, SP, LSU

I could do this all day, so I'll stop here...

LONG time ago. Underperformed would be an understatement. I wouldn't spend anything higher than a 8th or so on him personally.

A bit of a homer pick, but I would love to see the O's draft Louis Coleman. He was a relief pitcher up until this year, his senior year. He crushed this year as a starter. I have no clue where he projects to go.

114 innings 2.76 era 124 k 19 BB 13-2 record

From watching him, he absolutely kills against right handed pitchers. He could work a little more on improving vs Lefties. He might end up going back to the pen eventually though. His throwing motion, his body goes off to the right. It definitely causes troubles for righties. He could work on keeping the ball down a little bit more from the games that I saw.

Bad arm action, uneven command, and a small frame. He needs to go to college.

This kid has a great outlook considering the troubles he's had.

He goes to the high school right down the street and he's all the talk here. I'd also like to get Den Dekker as he's been a great player for UF.

I'll only give my top 5 in hopes the Orioles take one of them:

1 - Kendal Volz, RHP, Baylor.

I'd bring him in as a reliever and hopefully our future closer.

Volz showed a 92-95 mph fastball and a low-80s slider with late break as Team USA's closer last summer. He didn't allow an earned run in 14 innings, saved the gold-medal game at the FISU World Championships in the Czech Republic and looked like a possible top-10 pick for 2009. For some reason he has regressed his junior season. If it is deemed mechanical and not health related I feel he's worth the risk.

After he dropped his last three starts, Baylor used him out of the bullpen in the postseason. Volz has flashed an effective changeup and has a 6-foot-5, 225-pound frame built for a workhorse role, so he has the ingredients to be a starter at the next level—provided his previous fastball, slider and command return. If not, he looked well suited for a late-inning role last summer. But outside of his time with Team USA, he has been hit harder than someone with his stuff should.

2 - Keyvuis Sampson, RHP, Forest HS, OCALA, FLA

Florida State's top recruit, Sampson's lithe, athletic frame and power arm have attracted scouts' interest for the last two years. He reminds some scouts of Edwin Jackson as an African-American pitcher with athleticism and a quick arm that produces above-average velocity. He's touched 95-96 as the season has gone on, showing stronger stuff to go with a power breaking ball. He's shown feel for a changeup as well and has good present control and projects to have average future command thanks to his athleticism. He tends to vary his arm slot more than he should depending on the pitch and needs to become more consistent to make projections of average command come through. Clubs that believe in the arm and athleticism won't let him get through the first two rounds.

3 - Jeff Malm, 1B, Bishop Gorman HS, LAS VEGAS

Few high school players in the draft have a better track record of performance than Malm, who does it from the left side. Everywhere he goes, he hits, whether it's as the youngest player on the USA Baseball junior national team—where he saw more time at first base than Eric Hosmer—or as the only underclassman at the 2007 Cape Cod High School Classic. Playing for one of the nation's top high school teams, Malm was leading the state of Nevada with 15 home runs heading into the playoffs. The question is whether he will be able to hit for the same power with a wood bat. At a soft-bodied 6-foot-3 and 225 pounds, he's limited to first base and will need to produce power. He has a good arm—sitting at 87-89 mph as a pitcher—but can't play the outfield. As a lifelong Southern California fan with a long personal relationship with head coach Chad Kreuter, Malm's commitment to the Trojans is strong.

Malm is probably my favorite pick left but it's going to take some money to get him signed.

4 - Luke Bailey, C, Troup HS, LaGrange, GA.

IMO, Bailey is the best high school catcher left on the board. (not Stassi) If not for him having TJ surgery in April, he would have been a first rounder.

Bailey entered the season at the front of the national group of high school catchers, one of the strongest positions in the draft. He had shown a rare combination of hitting ability, raw power and arm strength, all of which graded above-average, as well as solid athleticism and surprising speed. Bailey's offense had slipped this spring, as he hit just three home runs. Scouts said he was tinkering too much searching for power, trying different strides and different timing mechanisms. Scouts had no questions about him defensively, where he ranks among the best athletes in the prep catcher group, and he showed toughness as a junior by playing through a broken rib. He has plenty of arm strength and was doing some ill-advised pitching for his high school team before going down with Tommy John surgery in April. Bailey has an Auburn commitment, having grown up a fan, but still was expected to be signable, much as the late Nick Adenhart signed after having had the surgery back in 2004.

5 - Brian Goodwin, OF, ROCKY MOUNT (N.C.) HS

It's going to take some money to sign him because he is a Boras client, but hey, it's not my money.

One of the better athletes in the draft class, Goodwin was part of a strong North Carolina prep class. Goodwin does a lot of things well and doesn't have a below-average future tool. Goodwin shined on the showcase circuit last summer, winning MVP of the Aflac All-American Game. The lefthanded hitter has above-average speed, and scouts generally grade him as average or above across the board, with the question coming with his power. Goodwin has present strength and a football body, which makes sense as he was an excellent kick returner in high school. A North Carolina signee, Goodwin could go in the supplemental first round or not until much later due to his college commitment and adviser.

Lots and lots of great talent still available. At this point it's "catching fish in a barrel". I'd love to see the Orioles grab one of the signability guys but we may be able to wait a few rounds before popping them.

So to all those grasshoppers out there... patience.

How far down do you think players like Sampson and Malm could fall due to their strong commitments. From what it sounds like, it would take first round money to get Malm. What about Sampson?

Eh, could take 2nd round money, but it's hard to say, for some reason even those guys were asking for $1 mil plus.

I think this is why some teams skimped early in the first and will add a bunch more of these type guys later.

It all depends on their demands. Any team interested in drafting these players will most likely talk to the player and their agent/advisor to see how much of a bonus they are looking for.

I could see Malm falling to the 10th round. I don't think Sampson will fall that far because I believe his demands and desire to go to college aren't as strong as Malm's. I think it's going to take at least $1mil to sign Malm.
