So far, in 6 IP, he has given up 5 runs, 7 hits, 3 HRs, 2 BBs and 2 K's.

Now, he has gone 6 IP, only thrown 85 pitches and thrown 66% of his pitches for strikes...So that's a positive.

Not an Arrieta debut for sure.

Went after the hitters, but got hit hard. Hopefully, I'll get to see him when they come home next week.

Definitely not an "I told you so" moment. That said, it's going to be interesting to see how Patton's stuff plays at AAA.

Why isn't it an I told you so moment? Are you just being nice here? It seems like several people on this board were skeptical of his success at AA and predicted that he would be exposed at AAA.

It's only one start, and he didn't get destroyed. I still don't think he's got anything though. Maybe next season. His park/luck neutralized stats in Bowie weren't that great at all, around a 4.07 FIP. That's higher than Mariotti's.

Well he kinda did get destroyed, but I agree that it's only one start, and I'm sure he'll be fine.

Yet another reason for not rushing players up here because they have a nice stretch in the minors, particularly double-A. A guy like Patton would be rough on lower level minor leaguers because of the nature of his stuff. His finesse can tie them in knots.

But in triple-A, you have a number of pitchers who get by on guile plus a number of hitters who've had a cup or two of coffee in The Show. Someone like Patton isn't such a mystery in that environment. However I'm hardly ready to write him off after one rough outing. In fact, maybe that game exposed some weaknesses he wouldn't have seen at Bowie, and he can work to correct them.

Give him time in other words.

I'm neither high nor low on Patton. I do think he'll need to regain some more velocity (assuming reports are accurate) before being very effective starter at the ML level though. Still, I think he could be a nice, cheap, alternative to a Hendrickson next year, and that's probably about his short term downside (assuming health).

The guy knows how to pitch.

Patton really had not pitched that well in his last couple of starts prior to his promotion. But, I wouldn't call yesterday a disaster. I still think we'll see him put up solid numbers in AAA.

We'll see how he does. I still have concerns about the mixed reports on his velocity. Radar readings aside, AAA should be a better test for him.

Because it's a single game. A lot remains to be seen.

I feel that anything we get from Patton is gravy.

From the "just saying" department.

Park/Luck Neutralized FIPs:
David Pauley: 4.12
John Mariotti: 4.13
Troy Patton: 4.17
Pedro Beato: 4.28
Bobby Livingston: 4.52

So, taking away name recognition from the argument, if all you heard about was Patton's stuff and his results, I don't think any of us would be overwhelmed.

Tillman: 3.05
Matusz: 2.81
Arrieta: 3.19

Same here. I feel like Scott alone, plus the whole getting rid of Tejada thing, has already made good on the Tejada trade, and whatever Albers/Patton/Sarfate/Costanzo gives us is extra.

Well it is safe to conclude that we wont get anything of value from Costanzo with his demotion to Bowie and subsequent still poor stats.

I've been skeptical on Patton as well what with the reports on his velocity. Whatever happens, let's remember that he still might not be 100% all the way back. His velocity might never return or it might jump a notch next year. Or he might wind up succeeding with what he's got right now.

I noticed that this kid pitcher on the Marlins had labrum surgery and he seems to be doing real well at the age of 22 in the majors. Sean West. And he's a power pitcher. He missed the 2007 season, repeated high A ball in 2008, and is now pitching for the Marlins.
