The post is doing a series on retired athletes and their lives. Here is one on a former Oriole.

I'll never forget the year he had for us in 2000. Productively possibly the best year of his career for a dismal and horrible hitting team.

Final line:

.296 average 10HR 86 RBI 37 SB 69BB/82K .813 OPS. I believe on that team he actually hit 3rd for a good portion of the year. I'll always have good memories of Delino.

I played against Delino several times and started a game against him once. He was a helluva player and a good guy. Thanks for pointing out the article. I didn't realize he was down here in the ATL like me. I might look him up this offseason. It has only been 20 years since we've talked.

Wow ... he makes $35k a year. That's got to be such a tough adjustment from making hundreds of thousands per year or even millions (depending on the point of his career). I always liked Delino. Without looking it up, I believe he was from Delaware ... maybe specifically Seaford, which is where my Dad was born. Man, he and Marquis Grissom were two fast dudes! Nice to see they are still friends.

Great article.

What a great article. I remember DeShields as an Oriole mainly because of his speed.....the dude was fast!! I've always been fascinated by guys who just can't seem to give up the game. But whether for love or money, baseball is incredibly addictive.

My defining memory of DeShields is that he struck out against Wade Boggs.
