This is MY rant!

WHY??? Are rep points reduced by TPTB? WTF does me giving rep points, ALL day long, if I see damn fit... make any difference?

WTF is the obsession with this bandwidth thing??? :angryfire:

Idiots! McLovin will back me up here I'll bet! If one or two poor slobs give out more than "our share" of rep points in 24 hours.... WHO TF cares? What does it cost the OH? Not. One. DIME.

I was ready to rant on searching after 30 or 60 seconds last night. 30 or 60 seconds, Whatever TF the limit is.... or LET ME SEARCH AS MUCH AS I WANT!

If I'm trying to find a certain post, and I search on some keywords... if it doesn't yield me my answer, then I'm going to t-y-p-e-s-o-m-e-t-h-i-n-g-t-f-E-L-S-E in! Why do I have to wait AT ALL?

I just don't understand why the RARE poster is restricted by the FEARS of the leaders of this (or ANY) site!

I know there could be some hacker attack, here OR elsewhere. MY GOD! There could be a sudden denial-of-service attack giving some posters REP til the sun comes up!

Or some BOT could come in searching at light speed for posts.

Yeah right!

I've taken stats courses too! I know probabilities. This crap is like bad stats posted on the main board!

I DEFY any Hangout official or non-official to show me some stat where unlimited rep points or searches really makes one iota of difference!

Um, actually...I moderate on another board, and lots of searches do bog the server down, especially board wide ones.

Is this about rep points or searches? Good rant I guess.....:scratchchinhmm:

Both! Here's how I see it.... There are about 1% of posters who would "abuse" the rep points limit or the the search limits. If it is such an INsignificant amount, then why is EVERYONE penalized because of the actions of the few?

It's just lowest common denominator territory. It's PATHETIC that mods ASSUME this badness. :(

It's not a moderator assumption. It's something built in to the system. I'm not positive it can be completely removed. It can be adjusted, but I think there's always some sort of limit.

And yeah, they're probably needed. Without them, you can get caught in to what we call on the other board as "rep circle jerks." Whether you realize it or not, people start repping in return and it just keeps going and going.

See, that's not my point Wedge. I don't dispute that searches could slow a board down. It's a disconnect. Unrelated. This board could prolly handle all the search traffic we could send at it

I'm saying that maybe 5% of posters have even the wherewithall to even know search exists. Why punish those of us who KNOW things for the assummed stupidity of the rest of the lemmings?

This is meant as NO offense to ANY poster or mod or Tony or anyone. It's just a fair question. Why can't we search as fast as our brains and our mouses and our computers will allow us? I see no good reason.

Another case of THE MAN, keepin' us down. ;)

Yeah man! It's like this... I determine the parameters of a search, I type in the 'keywords', I hit enter. The search then goes through space from my laptop to my router, then through some wires, then through some fiber optic cables, then I'm assuming my search travels through space to a satellite that is orbitting the Earth. It may then bounce to a few other satellites and then bounce back to Earth where the search is completed. The results of the search then presumably go through wires and fiber optic cables before going through space to a satellite, where the results are bounced back to my living room by way of some fiber optic cables, some wires, and a router. All that takes what, two maybe three nanoseconds?

But if I don't get the search right the first time, I have to wait 30 FREAKIN' SECONDS to try again??!! 30 SECONDS??!! Don't you know I don't have that kind of patience? Don't you know I don't have that kind of focus? Even Hulu is figuring out that if I have to sit through a 30 second break, I might get distracted and never catch the end of that episode of 'Fantasy Island' that is streaming through space onto my screen. 15 seconds tops! That's the maximum I'm willing to wait for this miracle of technology to find for me every discussion there has ever been about any particular topic that's on my mind.

30 seconds! :ohlord: Sheesh. We might as well go back to getting all our info from The Baseball Weekly if we have to wait that long!

;)

Are you guys serious? Is this really a major issue in your lives? If it is, time to reevaluate your lives.

We limit rep points for no other reason then some people give out way too many for no good reason and skews the rep system.

As for searches, that limit is set to ensure we are not "attacked" from within since searches take up CPU and we only have so much computing power.

I hope it could be picked up that I wasn't serious and was just ribbing Scott a bit. I think it's amazing the things we can do at the speed we can do them. I can wait 30 seconds if it helps. I hope Scott knew not to take me seriously either.

I'm also guessing the questions from Scott were honest ones, but the ranting tone was embellishment. But what's he gonna do, make separate posts here and in the rant section on the same subject? (rhetorical question, I think.)

Haven't you learned by now that you REALLY don't want to know the answers to these questions? ;)

We restrict the search to annoy Scott.

False. Where do you think our subscription dues go to? Each rep point costs the OH 2 cents, as stated by the IRP (International Rep Police). They are madmen, hawking message boards, waiting, waiting for another victim to give someone a rep point for an insightful or funny post. I urge you all, let us stop the IRP. No more rep points. Let's live in a peaceful, Orioles-loving community.

Unfortunatly, it's just one of those things...
