I just had my Mariner in for an oil change and the front differential fluid was pretty dark and the tech recommended I have it changed. I passed on the service, but I am going on a long driving trip this weekend and I'm thinking that I should have the service done. Should I?

What did he say it would cost? A lot of garages will try to convince you to make expensive repairs, even seemingly reputable garages, like say... um... GM GOODWRENCHERS.

It's cool. I took it back to the shop to have it done and explained my situation but they said that it will be fine to have it done the next time I brought it in, so it's cool.
It also looks like something I could possibly do on my own as well.

We've had it done twice in our Honda CRV (140,000 miles). Each time, before changing, we were getting a bit of rattling in the diff. The change fixed the rattle. Honda charged us about $80.

How noticeable was the rattle? Was it during turns?
They say it's supposed to be done every 30K miles....but I wonder.

Yep, during turns. It was very noticeable. I think our manual says something like every 80K miles, but the rattle forced us to do it about every 60K miles.
