During the game last night they said that he finally allowed them to option him down to the AHL. The funny part was there is no room for him in Hersey so we sent him to Detroit's AHL team the Grand Rapids Griffins. They are calling it a conditioning stint, however, its seems like an audition so that other clubs can see him.
I think the most likely scenario is that a KHL team takes him and pays half of his salary and we pay him half. With that being said I believe that he will no longer count against the cap and therefore give us plenty of room to resign Backstrom and Semin if we decide that's the best course of action.
This is a great step in the right direction, however, there is still a lot to be done.
Here's an article discussing his assignment.

This is the best news from this article. But it seems mostly like speculation but hopefully its true.:pray:
That brings us to the aforementioned club from Yaroslavl. After releasing Bonk, Lokomotiv has four foreign born players Richard ZednĂ*k, Josef Vasicek, Daniel Tjarnqvist and Zbynek Irgl, leaving one spot still open. According to Russian analysts, Lokomotiv does need a strong center. Earlier in the season, it was reported that Bonk was actually released in order to create a spot for Nylander. Even Radek Bonk(notes) in his interview to Sovetsky Sport said he had heard about such possibility. At the time, the Finnish head coach of the club Kari Heikkila called the rumors regarding Nylander's arrival in Yaroslavl "absurd."

So he still counts against the 23 man roster.

Too bad. All this accomplishes is letting him play with the hope that someone else will want him?

Basically but before this he wouldn't allow the caps to send him down. So this is a step in the right direction. He also said earlier that he wanted to only play in NHL and I think he starting to back down from that. I think the fact that he allowed this to happen means there is something in the works. Just my opinion though as I don't think he would go play for an AHL team if it didn't mean he would be player somewhere better soon. He clearly will never play for the caps again so I feel that this is a precursor to the eventual move of Nylander.
My one hold up would be how the NHL reacts to us sending Nylander to the KHL to rid ourselves of his contract. I could see them putting a rule in place to prevent teams from doing this is the future.

The sooner we can get rid of Nylander the better. This is good news and hopefully it leads to him leaving the Caps.

My biggest question on this whole thing is this:
Is Nylander really this bad? I mean...so bad that he can't center a 4th line?

Nylander just doesn't fill Bruce's system. And when you play 3rd/4th line duty, you need to be decent defensively, which Nylander lacks.

More important to not fitting in Bruce's system is the money he makes....and thus the cap hit.

Since you've posted this there's been another updated from a Caps official saying don't expect another update today. While there's a good chance he gone I'm not celebrating just yet.
As for Forsberg, I hope that's just a bunch of BS we are about to get rid of one aging Swede we don't need another one. If we dump Nylander that's almost 5 mil saved for the Cap we don't need waste that on a forward. Right now we need D help and we have that in Alzner.

After that update another one said it's almost a lock TO happen, I wouldn't expect anything until tomorrow at the earliest.
The Forsberg thing is out of left field, I haven't even seen that as a rumor anywhere, but where does he play if we sign him cheap? Backstrom and Morrison are locks 1 and 2. Forsberg can't center a checking line, so 4 is out, and our third line only gets like 8-11 min a game, so what's the point of paying millions for a guy to skate 10 min?

I think his most important role would be as a team leader.

This point was made in another thread about the lack of discipline on the team.
Also I could see Forsberg getting his feet wet with the 3rd line and maybe moving up to play LW or C if someone is ineffective or hurt. Come playoff time I think someone like Forsberg would be critical for us make a run at the cup.

The Forsberg to Caps rumor has been swirling around for the past month. I'm not in favor of signing him and I'd rather have the $3.5-4MM in cap space flexibility so we can move up Alzner and trade for another fwd later in the year.

That is if you are banking that a guy that hasn't played in the NHL in a few years, and has never played a full season is going to come back with no rust on a new team and be effective. Forsberg a few years ago maybe, but he's over the hill and fragile. More scoring is not what this team needs, and I'm pretty sure he was never much of a leader since Sakic carried the weight in that department his whole career.
Pothier, Poti, Green and Schultz were all regarded more for their offense than defense, having all 4 in the lineup is going to cost you on D, and while we have some players that are good defensive forwards, overall we are better offensively than defensively.

Yeah, I'd have to think this whole move thing was to get Alzner or any other minor leaguer they'd want to add up here.

Here's an update from today's Washington Post
The Caps are in a holding pattern with regard to Michael Nylander and whether he'll accept a loan to Russia. Things are moving in that direction, but he's still considering his options, I'm told. Knowing how meticulous Nylander is, this does not come as a surprise.
WTF!? This guy needs to go and be done with it. He needs to consider his options? Last time I checked he has two, sit here and do absolutely nothing, or go to Russia and play. If he thinks some other NHL team is magically going to want him he's dreaming.
