Thought I'd make a thread for us to track and discuss the Heisman trophy candidates.
I know I might be being a bit of a homer here, but I have Mark Ingram in the lead right now.
Right now I'd rank the top 3 as follows:
1. Mark Ingram-RB, Alabama
2. Tim Tebow-QB, Florida
3. Tony Pike-QB, Cincinnati
It really seems like it's going to come down to Ingram and Tebow.

Tebow's numbers seem to be down signifcantly. I'm not sure why he should be among the favorites at this point in the season.

He was hyped so much he'll have to be terrible to fall out of the competition, I don't like it but it's the truth.

That doesn't always happen with the Heisman. If it was close between Tebow and a couple other guys, then sure, he probably gets the nod. But there are a slew of QBs that have better numbers than he does. He probably gets some points for coming back from the concussion to lead Fla over LSU, but if he isn't more impressive the rest of the season, I wouldn't be surprised if he isn't even invited to NY.

Tebow is up there because there have been so many times this season where he has willed the team to victory. Everyone knows that until the UGA game this past weekend, the Gators haven't been amazing on offense, yet Tebow has managed games and taken it into his own hands to get us the W. While the stats aren't there, it's the intangibles Tebow has (that I'm sure the media has kept you informed about) that has kept Tebow towards the top of Heisman ballotting.
Now, finishing out the season like he played against UGA will make it a one-man race, no matter how Ingram or Pike play.

This is due at least partially to his play as well, no?

There is no clear cut candidate this year...Right now, it seems to be McCoy, Tebow and Ingram...Tebow, while statisically not amazing, could win more as an MVP type as opposed to best college player of the year.
That is the talk anyway.

Honestly didn't see it with 3 kids and Halloween responsibilities. I think big game performance should play a factor...and it hasn't been there, yet.

I think he will get credit for a big game performance at LSU. The numbers certainly weren't there that day, but he was coming fresh off a concussion and he made plays when he had to against the #4 team (at the time) in one of the most hostile environments for a visiting player. The voters love that kind of stuff.

Ingram's gotta be the frontrunner now, right?
Huge performance in the biggest game of the year thus far.
Ingram's season stats:
175 carries, 1,148 yards, 6.6 YPC, 8 TD.
24 catches, 216 yards, 3 TD.

Agreed, he's really been the only consistent superstar in college football this year on a team that's worth a damn. I definitely agree with the Tebow seniment though - no player wills his team to win like Tebow does.
I think a lot depends on the SEC champ. If Ingram runs over the great Florida D and Bama wins, he seals the deal. If Tebow leads his team to another SEC Champ and To the BCS title game, then I would think he wins it based on MVP-type consideration rather than stats. The media loves him too much to not think that situation is plausible.
Is there really anyone else in the race?? McCoy is garbage. Like OU last year, McCoy and Texas would not be able to stand up to an SEC defense like UF or Bama. Pike can't be considered because the Big East isn't real football. The Houston QB had to go undefeated to be considered. Anyone?

Gerhart from Stanford and Spiller from Clemson should be considered, but i's really down to Ingram and Tebow right now, IMO.

Still no obvious front-runner. I'm hoping Jacquizz Rodgers can have a monster game in the Civil War and get at least an invite to New York.

Well, if you watched the Texas vs. A&M game, the Texas QB helped himself a lot, even though the Aggies exposed his team. Texas dodged a bullet.
And if you watched the Iron Bowl, the Bama RB pretty much took his name off the list. Bama dodged a bullet too.
Meanwhile, Tebow continues to be overrated. Not sure what part of football he's better at than GT's Nesbitt, except for looking wholesome and going to the right football school...

Like I said....no obvious front runner. McCoy has come on strong late in the season, and has probably earned an invite. But with the way he was playing early in the season, Texas probably wouldn't still be undefeated if it weren't for their defense....which makes their disappearing act at A&M baffling.
I didn't see the AL/Aub game yesterday, but Ingram must have been pretty bad to have taken himself out of the running in one game. But last impressions usually hold a lot of sway with voters....which, again, helps McCoy.
Toby Gerhard and CJ Spiller definitely deserve serious consideration, and I expect each to get some votes...especially Gerhard, who is the only California-based player under serious consideration, which should help him carry the West Coast vote. QBs Kellen Moore of Boise St and Case Keenum of Houston have both put up tremendous numbers....but both will probably have the "system" label put on them, plus the lack of in-conference competition will probably hurt them too.
If Tebow even gets an invite to NY then it should be considered a crime. But he's the kind of guy the media just loves to eat up, so expect the worst.
Which brings me back to 'Quizz. Honestly, I think that the lack of national media exposure he gets by playing in Corvallis, OR (the Civil War will be OSU's only nationally televised game this season) will keep him out of consideration. I just hope that a huge game in the Civil War, and a strong subsequent performance in the Rose Bowl, will serve notice to the voters for next year.

Why not Toby Gerhart? 26 rushing TDs I believe? (He averages more then 14 points a game.) Plus 1500+ yards? That is a gross season. Better then Ingram/Tebow/Spiller IMO.
I know this comes off as being a homer but Ryan Williams on VT had the best freshman year I have ever seen (9 tds in the last three games). Watch out for him in the coming years to get consideration for the Heisman.

He also has the advantage in that half the voters are probably watching Spiller right now, while the other half are watching McCoy/Suh....whereas he likely had the entire voting audience to himself earlier.

Well, the East Coast Bias is alive and well.
Rush Yards TD
Toby Gerhart 311 1736 26
Mark Ingram 249 1542 15
And let's not forget, Gerhart's stats were accumulated in 12 games, while Ingram's were in 13 games.

Ingram has him in YPC...but that's about it. Don't get me wrong...Ingram is a great player. But, he's not even the best RB in college football this season, let alone the best player. I think my ballot would have gone: Gerhart, Suh, McCoy, Ingram, Tebow. I wonder how many of the voters know that there is football outside of the SEC.

Congrats to Ingram for bringing the Tide its first Heisman. Now just don't jinx us in the title game. If I had a vote and wasn't so Tide-biased, I'd have picked Suh, then Gerhart or Ingram, but I do feel that Ingram is totally deserving.

Classic Alabama fan's reaction to make your own team's accomplishment somehow about Auburn. ;)
By the way, I was at a wedding reception last night when news started to trickle in about Ingram winning it, and a buddy of mine who played football at Bama turns to me and says the Heisman voters should be embarrassed. I thought that was a little harsh, as I didn't really have a problem with Ingram winning it. It was a pretty weak year for Heisman hopefuls and college football as a whole, so the winner was really a toss up.

I don't know about embarrassed, it was a case where there was not one candidate that clearly stood well above the others, so the writers resorted to homer-ism, and the eastern voters outnumbered all of the others.....I'm sure very few of them even watched a single Stanford game. It will be a long time before a non-USC player from the west coast ever wins one of the more prestigious awards in college football.

Yeah, there's nothing to be embarrassed about. All of the players, save for Tebow, were at least defensible. I'm a Bama guy, but take a look at this (http://www.sbnation.com/2009/12/11/1196690/ndamukong-suh-is-better-than-your). It would have been a great year to break tradition and have a defensive player win the Heisman. Still glad that Ingram got it though. Next up, Trent Richardson.

While it's nothing to be embarassed about I do think it's hard to objectively make a case that Ingram was College Football's most outstanding player over Gerhart. If Toby played on the East Coast I don't think the voting would have been all that close.
