View Full Version : Pryce down the depth chart?

Dwan Edwards has formally moved ahead of Trevor Pryce to be the Ravens' starting left defensive end.
Edwards has 11 tackles and a sack in his last three games to Pryce's seven stops and one sack, so they're playing in a rotation. Still, Edwards is in a contract season, and the promotion won't hurt him in 2010 free agency.

Where's Paul Kruger?

Obviously the best move.
Pryce should only be in the game during pass rushing situations. That's his strength.

I'd like to know this as well.
It's interesting in one sense because Edwards was a 2nd Rd pick too I believe and also didn't play much at all during his rookie campaign. But now he's certainly an impact player. Kruger may be taking a similar path, but it is pretty disappointing when your 3rd Rd pick is out there having an impact.
As SG said, I definitely like this move. I'm not so sure it's Pryce being "demoted" in the depth chart, but rather he and Edwards platooning to their situational strengths. It makes good sense and hopefully this will give Pryce more energy when he's out there to overcome those ridiculous holds he always faces.

That non-holding call on Pryce last game was one of the most blatent I have ever seen. Even the Steelers would have been called on that! No wonder Pryce has so few sacks. The Bengal had his one arm completely hooked around him the entire time he was being pushed back by Trevor!

We've been through this before. Until he's a regular contributor on special teams, the team's not going to be playing him.
That being said I do question why we need 6 down linemen active for each game (Ngata, Gregg, Pryce, Edwards, Bannan, and McKinney/Talavou). In the past this team has made due with 5 active on gameday, with the 2 backups rotating with the 3 starters on a regular rotation.

On a similar note, Talavou was pushed all over the place Sunday. For a big guy he doesn't seem very strong.

Remember that of his 330 or 340 lbs, about 40 lbs is hair. :p

Well, the Ravens need to adjust then.
Our pass rush is clearly anemic....it's either the case where the FO blew it with the pick or Harbaugh is being foolishly stubborn with his gameday roster management.
There's definitely a roster spot out there for him.

I lean towards the latter. All we heard about all preseason was "what a motor this guy had." Furthermore he got EXTENSIVE action in the preseason and probably played more snaps than anyone else on the team. I thought he performed reasonably well with the first unit and fully expected him to be a regular contributor on 3rd down pass rushes.
Harbaugh seems to be a coach that puts a huge premium on carrying many "special teams-only" players on the gameday roster. These players include David Tyree, Matt Lawrence, Edgar Jones, and Prescott Burgess. I'm not trying to diminish the importance of these role players, but if pass rush is such a problem, is Matt Lawrence really more important than someone who can potentially remedy the problem?

I have thought that for a year now. It did not matter last year but IMO Harbs focus on ST players has kept us from putting our best roster up on game day.
All other teams build their ST's off the needs of the Offense and Defense, we do it the other way around. Add LJ Smith to your list of people who see's very little time on the field except for kick coverage. If he is up, Edgar Jones should be down to make room for Kruger.
