It's not because they are consistently a mediocre team that is always overrated and fawned on by the media....although they are.

It's not because I can't stand their fat windbag of a coach....although I can't.

It's not even because they believe Jesus cares that they score touchdowns...so much so they had to build a statue of him behind one of the stadium end zones.

Nope.

It's because their obnoxious fans think that every year the National Championship is their birthright and if they don't win it then it's because some horrible person(s) stole it from them. To wit...

Notre Dame quarterback Jimmy Clausen was punched in the face by an irate fan outside a South Bend restaurant early Sunday morning and has a swollen eye, a person briefed on the incident said on Monday.

That person said Clausen was "sucker-punched" by a fan as he left an establishment after having dinner with his parents.

- ESPN.com (http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=4684326)

How classy, Notre Dame fans. First of all, Clausen is the main reason your sorry football team actually managed to win six games and become eligible for a bowl game. But because he didn't win them all for you, it's OK to sucker punch the kid while he's out dining with his parents? Unreal. I wonder how many recruits and their families that are considering whether or not to accept an offer to go to Notre Dame are going to be crossing them off the list after reading this?

Talk about another black eye for Notre Dame football. :wedge:

I see your point, and I understand the sentiments of ND fans always feeling like they belong. But this one just sounds like a "drunk guy punches guy in face" story...I wouldn't make too big of a deal out of it. Drunken idiots do dumb things, and every fan base has them.

Obviously this is an isolated incident. And I certainly wouldn't be the least bit surprised that alcohol was involved. But you know what they say about the effects of alcohol....it merely causes you to drop your guard and expose your true feelings to the world.

The sense of entitlement is real. What ND fans fail to understand is the realities of present day college football. First, what ND did years ago does not automatically qualify them for BCS bowls. The BCS rankings do not compute ND's records form the Rockne, Leahy, and Parsegian eras.

Second, and most of all, the institution has taken the stance that they will not make exceptions in admitting student athletes that don't meet the University's high admission standards.....and I actually applaud them for that. They want to be known as a top notch school first, athletic program second. But their arrogant fans need to understand that this means that many of the top high school athletes are pretty much off limits to them. And nowhere will that have a bigger impact than in football. The truth is, unless they take the approach of scheduling weaker opponents, 6-8 wins is about what they should expect....and an occasional 3-win season like 2007 is certainly possible. And contending for National Championships/BCS Bowls are pretty much out of the question. That's just reality.

I suggest ND fans adopt a new cheer with which to intimidate opponents.

"That's all right,
that's okay,
you'll be working
for us someday!"

Unfortunately, it sort of does. Outside of teh championship game, the BCS allows for selection of the "desired teams" to play in the "right game"...and a lot of that has to do with attendance. If college football doesn't make changes, the BCS will still focus on what ND stands for, how many fans it attracts, and how many people will watch.

I love Notre Dame because they beat Miami,Florida, and Florida state. I hate all three schools. ND hasn't had a good team since the Lou Holtz era. Maybe Urban Meyer can turn it around.

True, which is why I threw the "automatically qualify" in my statement. Sadly, while Notre Dame has become irrelevant on the field, off the field they are still very much relevant in the overall picture of college football. Hence, Notre Dame's shabby bowl record in recent years....where they always seem to be selected for a higher-level bowl than they deserve, are matched up against a far superior opponent, often get blown out, and impartial college football fans simply hoping to see an exciting and competitive game end up being the real losers.

Except Notre Dame never plays any of those schools anymore.

That's true. ND has done everything to make Weis a winner. Another reason to fire his fat butt.
