View Full Version : No Love For Haywood

I decided to check out the joke that is NBA All Star voting today, more or less for something to do than for any actual purpose. So I get on, go to NBA centers, and scan for Brendan Haywood's name..only to come up with nothing. Now, they only have 12 centers listed, so obviously not each team from the East can have their starting center listed, but I'm not sure how he can get let off of the list. If you want to vote for B Wood, you have to do a write in, which is completely ridiculous IMO.
One of the things that frustrated me the most was that, once against despite only listing 12 centers, they were able to list both Kendrick Perkins and Rasheed Wallace for Boston.
Let's compare the 3 player's statistics for the season thus far, looking at Points, Rebounds, Offensive Rebounds, Blocks, and Turnovers:
PPG RPG ORPG BPG TO
12.4 8.2 2.2 1.9 2.7 - Kendrick Perkins
9.6 10.6 4.1 2.3 1.3 - Brendan Haywood
10.2 4.5 0.8 0.9 0.7 - Rasheed Wallace
Obviously Rasheed Wallace has a sort of different value because he plays a perimeter game that neither Haywood or Perkins play, but he has no business being listed over Haywood.
I'm more or less angry with the system, because I'm sure Sheed would have probably gotten more votes than Haywood even if they were both listed. Maybe this should go in the Rants section, but it's just ridiculous to have 4 teams starting centers have to be a write in. In years past, I wouldn't have really been as bothered, but Brendan has played like a top 5 center in the East, and although I wouldn't expect and All Star appearance, to not even be listed at the position is terrible. Don't hold it against him that he's surrounded by garbage right now.
/Rant
I'm good now :) Just wish the ONE bright spot for the team could get a little bit of respect. He did just DOMINATE superman ;)

I am glad I have stopped watching the NBA if 9.6/10.6/2.3 makes you a top 5 center.

What's wrong with a double-double every night backed up by almost 2.5 blocks? That's pretty darn good center play in any era, isn't it? It's not elite, but how many elite centers are normally in a conference at one time?

There's nothing wrong with that line, especially when you consider the other offensive options on the team, which I'm sure "Can O' Corn" is well aware of.
He's probably another guy who plays shirts vs. skins at the Y every Saturday, draws up plays and can't stand when you don't pass the ball at least 4 times before taking a shot.

Nope, haven't played the game since I fell out of shape when I left the service, and when I did my job was to try and defend the slowest guy on the other team and pick up any rebounds I could.
I never said it was bad, just top five to me should be more on the line on 16/12/2.5 or so. I am just lamenting the death of the center position in the modern game.
And Pedro, why put my name in quotes? That just seems odd to me.

Dwight Howard is considered by many to be the best center in the league today and his career averages are 17.3/12.6/2
And you don't watch the NBA anymore because you believe the center position is dead? Do you watch college basketball? There are hardly any "pure" centers in college anymore, certainly fewer than in the NBA.

I don't watch the nba anymore because the game overall bores me now, thats all. It isn't center specific I just don't get much enjoyment out of it.
You will notice I did not attempt to state I had any great knowledge of the game today, I just remarked that his stats looked light to be in the upper echelon of centers.

Eh you took a shot at the NBA, as many people do. Since I love the league I defend it. Haywood isn't some incredible center, but he's been pretty good this year.

Exactly how I feel..and Haywood seems to be a hard worker, evident by the progress that he's made in the last few seasons. He's doing it again tonight..a couple minutes left in the 3rd quarter, he's got 13 and 13, with a block. Brendan is never going to be a #1 scoring option or anything like that, but he has become a very nice center to pair with a couple of scorers. He's become one of my favorite players on this mess of a team right now.

16 and 20 tonight in Chicago for Haywood..he did have the benefit of 2 overtimes, but I believe he had 15 and 16 at the end of regulation. He was playing like a MAN!

It's a shame his efforts are going to waste -- void Arenas' deal. Trade Butler. Trade 'Tawn. Blow it up. Start from scratch. A proper rebuilding process in the NBA can have a competitive team within 2-3 seasons...
