Can anyone give me a little info on what to do once your PC is infected/attacked. My home PC came under attack yesterday. I was looking at refrigerator review site and all of a sudden I hear the hard drive working liek crazy and a pop-up message says it's a virus attack, but the message I wasn't sure was legit Windows message or not(becasue it didn't look legit). So I shut down all of the internet windows and things seemed to have subsided. BUT, I then walked away from the PC to go eat dinner.....when I came back there were about 30 little red shields with "X"s along the task bar and an internet window with "Porno.org" on it....ugh......and a few smaller pop-ups saying it was a virus attack. So I shut it down. I then restarted and as soon as it was booted up(booted normally), the hard drive starts spinning and workin again and I try to open AVG to scan and it wouldn't open so I shut it right down again. And that's where ti si right now, shut down.
My question is how to I get it started up and do a virus scan/repair?? Windows XP Pro. AVG free version for virus protection. Do I start windows in safe mode and go from there?? HELP!!
Thanks.

Run the virus scan in safe mode. If that doesn't work simply use System Restore. (Start menu>>>Accessories>>> System Tools>>> System Restore)

Thanks. Fortunately I got it fixed fairly easily. A guy here at work had the same virus..."AntiVirus Soft" and gave me the info to fix it. Yes by starting in Safe Mode then using Malware.

I had a similar virus last week and my nephew helped me through it. I had warnings about trojans and viruses all over my screen...now, that sent me into a panic.
He's telling me that it's not a dangerous one. His IT dept. that he works in, is thinking it was actually sent out by Malware and then then you use them to rid your computer of the virus. :scratchchinhmm: Doesn't make sense to me, but then, what do I know about computers...obviously not much.
I was looking at Ralph Lauren olympic team gear, when this happened. So, he went into the same site (Ralph Lauren) and it happened to him also.
BTW, he also had me switch my virus protection to Microsoft instead of AVG.
I'm glad I have somebody in the family that helps me. Otherwise, I don't think I would even use a computer at home.

Sounds like a variation of the Vundo virus. It's a RATHER nasty one, last I checked like the 2nd or 3rd worst one out there. It seems like it's gone, but finds little ruts to hide in in your backup data or temp files and replicates itself after a start-up. It will shut down any anti-virus, or malware programs, then lock your programs so that you can't open anything you could remotely use to change or delete files including task manager, msconfig, and things of that sort.
Hopefully it's not that bad, sounds like a more watered down version, the Vundo shuts everything down, but opens a window to simulate a virus infection, and then offers a program that will remove it (for a fee of course). It's just pretty tough to get rid of, so I hope its not that one.

Honestly, running a Malwarebytes in safe mode will remove the vast majority of viruses and other forms of viruses.
Just make sure you update the virus definitions prior to running the scan. Unless you have a really good reason not to, I would disable System restore as it can be a location where these things can hide.

I have this same problem now. Should I start the computer in "safe mode with networking" to get the latest update of MalwareBytes to run the scan? Or should I use regular "Safe Mode"?
I am just wondering if the latest version of MalwareBytes I have will clean the virus up.
