Hi all-
Long story short, I'm moving out in the sticks. Northern Harford County to be specific. Neither Comcast nor Verizon currently provides high-speed internet to the new house, so I'm looking for ideas/suggestions. Thanks!

That's where you live out in the woods with no connection to the outside world whatsoever.

I would hope you would avoid the OTHER part of it, with the mail bombings and all, but hey, that's up to you :)

How much bandwidth do you need?

(Hopefully) enough for my son to play Xbox Live.

That is going to be rough because satellite internet is pretty damn slow compared to normal broadband. Not to mention a terrible price to speed ratio. Maybe you hit jackpot and Google will test run their ISP in your area. ;)

I hope so. The only thing my son's asked for as we've planned this move is a high-speed internet connection so he can stay in-touch with old friends. Our house search got more and more rural as it progressed and, well...

I called Comcast and they don't currently service the house and have no documented plans to. That doesn't mean it's not in the works, it's just not public yet. FWIW...there's a fairly large development being constructed a little further off the main road from our new house that I'm hoping Comcast (or Verizon or maybe even Google!) plans to service. We'd be within close enough proximity that I imagine we might qualify for their service.

DAMN!

UPDATE: Armstrong Cable FTW! They're a Comcast clone. Same technology, just stretching over the Southern PA border into MD. Thank the maker! I'm so happy I don't have to back pedal on my promise...he could be throwing a fit right now about leaving Baltimore for NorHarCo but he hasn't resisted at all. In fact he's been just the opposite and I would have hated to shoot him down on his only request.

I don't see why he would be throwin' a fit. Afterall, don't they give free banjo lessons up there. :p

I have had Armstrong Cable since December with their internet/telephone and so far am quite pleased with the service (that is the cable/internet/telephone). Their DVR (had 2 of them) sucked to the high heavens and ended up buying a TIVO unit (formally had Dishnetwork), while using one of their cable cards. Their speed is so much faster than what I had before with Verison DSL.

I finally gotten them straightened out on what I was suppose to pay (had a flyer with special promo) is another story all together. Got the billing fixed so far and just this past Friday I lost interent and telephone, still had cable. I called them and within 1 hour they had a truck here and he stated the problem was at the pole that they would have to send a technician. The technician guy with a bucket truck showed up within 1 hour and fixed the problem. All total I was out of internet/telephone service for less than 2 hours.

The outage is not bad from the stories I have heard from other cable companies. I'm please so far with them...

Well, not to pee in your cornflakes... My old man lives up there, and he has Armstrong. FTW isn't an acronym he would use. Maybe FML. But it is better than nothing. Or satellite internet.

Your only other option is a residential ISDN line. Its quite expensive particularly to get installed. Unless Armstrong is a total disaster, ISDN isn't a likely winner.
