View Full Version : NBA Playoffs Competition

adamwolff11

I was thinking since this isn't the most active board on here, it'd be kinda cool to get a little playoff competition going between the handful of us that actually pay attention and realize the NBA is still a functioning league!

I was thinking everyone makes their predictions, the whole way through the playoffs, and assign a point value to each round. For instance, picking a correct first round game gets you 5 points, second round 10 points, third round game 15 points, and so on. I would be open to changes to this system, just something I thought up that was simple.

I can handle keeping track of point standings, since I doubt we'll have too many involved, and I'll update stats as series end. If you're interested, post your picks for all games in this thread before the first game on Saturday at 3:00PM EST.

Playing for pride, perhaps rep to the winner?

Scoring
5 Points for picking Round 1 Winner
10 Points for picking Round 2 Winner
15 Points for Picking Conference Finals Winner
20 Points for Picking Finals Winner

+3 Bonus Points for picking Winner in correct # of games
+5 Bonus Points for picking Winner in correct # of games AND having the matchup correct

How about 1 bonus point for correct # of games, and after the first round 2 bonus points if you pick the correct games AND the teams are correct. For example, if I have Cleveland over Miami in 5 and they do it, I get 2 bonus points, but if I had picked Boston to beat Miami, i only get 1 bonus pt. What do you think?

So, assuming I'm understanding correctly..if you are able to predict both teams that will be in the game, and the winner, you get 2 points. However, if you just pick the winner, and the other team you don't have correct, you get 1 bonus point?

And I assume the first round would just be worth 1 point then, right? Since obviously the matches are already set lol.

You have to get the number of games correct to get any bonus points. That's the key. 1 bonus for that, 2 bonus if you have the matchup right...no bonus points if you just pick the winner, but not in the correct amount of games.

Would you like to do this as the only scoring, or in addition to the scoring I mentioned earlier?

I'm thinking in addition to..this way, you can still get points if you pick the series, but it's a way to get a few extra points.

Cool, maybe even up the bonus points..Re reading the OP, with 20 points for the finals, maybe go 3 and 5 or something. Who knows...your call.

I was really close to picking it.

Even though I didn't pick it, I'll still be rooting for them, especially after Phil Jackson's comments.

Kinda strange coming from a guy who's had Kobe and MJ, who have enjoyed some of the best star treatment in the league.

Durant is the best player amongst those two teams at this point. Unless Kobe's body is suddenly healed and he has a decent amount of athleticism back.

I won't be picking OKC though.

My Utah pick isn't look too good with their injury issues.

The Lakers offense wasn't that good, but they played great D led by Artest. Even though Kobe wasn't very effective offensively, he seemed pretty good in terms of his athleticism, so that's a good sign.

Durant didn't look too good Beaner.;)

Very surprised the Blazers beat the Suns.

Mavs-Spurs should be a really good series.

I didn't want to speak too soon on this one, but don't be surprised if this series is a lot closer than many of you have predicted. Or even if Portland pulls an upset. Of all the possible teams the Blazers could have faced headed into the final week of the regular season, it was believed that Phoenix presented the best matchup for them. The Blazers do a good job of forcing up-tempo teams like the Suns to play their style of game, even without Brandon Roy.

Yeah, I forgot how far you take your UNC love.

The Nuggets are lucky that the Jazz have 2 major players out with injury, otherwise I think there was a good shot that you wouldn't have had those UNC guys to root for after round one.

It's absurd to be honest...i'm actually really excited that UNC Wilmington and Appalachian State just hired two Heels..so, yeah, it's pathetic.

I agree 100%, and picked Utah in fact. Those losses really hurt, especially AK47, who can play defense, and would have helped a ton on Melo..

Either way, it looks like the home teams are winning the majority of these games, we'll see what happens when the higher seeds take it to the road over the next few days.

AK is by far the worse loss between him and Memo. He has been the catalyst for great play all year. He's been in LA getting some special platelet treatment so I'm hoping he will be back soon. I wish I had seen this thread earlier and I would have made my predictions.

Not looking too good for the Lakers. They still are probably the favorites to win this round, but Kobe is far from his past self, and unless that changes, it's hard to imagine them winning the title or even getting out of the west.

Looks like my Jazz pick is going to come through which is impressive given their injuries.

So how sick are LeBron and Wade right now?

LeBron's last 3 games:

16-23 40 pts, 8 ast, 8 reb
14-26 39 pts, 8 ast, 10 reb
11-17 37 pts, 11 ast, 12 reb

Plus 10 blocks this series.

Wade's series averages:

33.8 pts 6 ast, 5 reb, .605 FG%

I will say, I love the NBA, but in no sport is there more preferential treatment and I honestly do put David Stern behind most of it. I doubt he goes to his officials and says "Hey, Lebron makes us money, let's make sure he gets to the finals", but I think every official is made sure to know what is in the NBA's best interest.

The NBA is unfortunately a league where good players, not good teams, are what a lot of the casual fans are interested in. The NBA needs a championship for Lebron, so his legend can continue to grow.

For as big of an NBA enthusiast as I am, I think David Stern is a lying rat. That said, I'm still enjoying the hell out of the playoffs. It sucks that you have to get past the BS sometimes, but if you're an actual fan of the game of basketball, it is still entertaining.

Yup yup. Just read Donaghy's book. I do enjoy the NBA playoffs but the preferential treatment is unbearable at times. And I agree that Stern is 100% in favor of it.
