Got word from Scott Hoffman this evening that Bob is gone from there. If that's really the case, and even if it isn't, Nestor is a flippin idiot.

Wow...the best guy there.

Any chance he is gone because he got a MASN or BAL gig?

Or did he get fed up with how NST does things and he spoke up?

No way. Better be because he got a better job offer. There is literally no reason to listen to that pathetic radio station now.

Yep, it's true. Just got a note from him. I've got to think someone who wants a good talk show host on their station will step up and hire him. No one can say he won't make their station better.

I would imagine that having any sort of pro-Oriole views would cost you a job on that station. That guy was good at what he did and was objective. I wish him the best and think he should get a good job.

Please let them hire him to replace Cunningham and steal an hour or two from Viviano or Garceau. I would sort of feel bad for him if he had to follow Rob Long to 1370, but maybe if he comes on board they will do something about their signal strength.

The Fan is the only sports station in the area that I can get 24 hrs a day, so unless he goes to WBAL, I really hope he finds a home at 105.7.

Here's a weird thought: When the Ravens fired Billick, Nestor fired Rob Long shortly after. Now that Trembley got canned, they fire Haynie.

Maybe it's just a coincidence....

As a former radio guy, I've heard a lot of stations are in trouble across the country. Satellite radio and station ownership conglomerates make it really tough to keep local, quality online talent on the air. So many stations have moved to 90 percent or more syndicated packages, because it is far cheaper than paying people.

It is a bummer.

I don't really see it as a bummer. Haynie will move to a reputable station and continue. It isn't him that will suffer. WNST chose their path and will suffer the consequences. Of course they will scream and pout that it is everyone elses fault but in reality, it was their choice.

I say good riddance.

Yeah, I agree. Guys like Bob is what makes sports talk radio worth listening to. With the exception of a few, most national shows only cater only to large markets.

That also mean I am out at NST, since Haynie was by and far the best thing on that station. Hope he lands on 105.7 or 1370, Haynie is much better than either of those stations mid-day guys.

Also, could Nestor be any more self-serving in that 'blog' entry?

Although somehow we have about 40,000 people we touch every day in Baltimore and can prove it now on the web where more of our revenue comes every day because there really ARE a lot of you who are WNST followers!
I hope he's not saying he's getting to 40,000 people everyday on the web. Every month, maybe.

Using a simple site like Alexa, you can see that he's getting about double what the OH front page gets (not the forums). For a company that's touting their grand web presence, that's pitiful.

If you stop reading after the 3rd or 4th paragraph, he actually makes some valid points. For those who enjoy listening to local radio personalities, it's good to support the businesses that sponsor their shows. Especially as the economy crawls along in a painfully slow recovery. Otherwise, instead of being able to to hear guys like Bob Haynie and Rob Long, you'll be stuck listening to the likes of Colin Cowherd and Jim Rome....and personally I'd turn the station to NPR before I listen to those two circus clowns.

/local radio public service announcement

And I definitely recommend avoiding reading past the 4th paragraph of Nestor's post, as it's just his typical self-aggrandizing drivel mixed in with a couple "Angelos Is Destroying Everything I Love" tirades.

Rob Long? He's doing just fine. I'd still encourage everyone to solicit the sponsors of their favorite on-air radio hosts (and click on the ads here at the Orioles Hangout...you know you want to check out the Evony chick, find out what Cougar Life is all about, or learn just what's so revitalizing about the showers at the Holiday Inn and Holiday Inn Express! :D) in order to show your support and help keep them on the air.

It's also no secret the the advertising dollars in this market have dwindled. That being said, the outpouring of support for Bob and disdain for Nestor on here, on Facebook, and around the web speaks volumes as to whether or not this was a wise decision. I must have seen or heard 20 times this weekend, "Bob was the ONLY reason to listen to that station." That alone answers the question of Bob's marketability!

The shame in all of this is the hypocrisy that exists. Getting rid of good talent, replacing it with lesser, lower-priced talent, and all on the way to the bank. All of which are accusations that have been bandied about over the last few years.

The good news in all of this is that Bob's got way too many fans, way too many friends, and way too many vocal supporters to remain unemployed in this market.

The sad thing is when Nestor first bought the station, it was the lone local sports voice in Baltimore and was a lot of fun to listen to. Unfortunately its has become a shadow of its former self

I can't wait to see where Bob winds up, but in my mind he is the best sports radio voice in Baltimore.

I give Nestor credit for that. He knew a 24-hour sports-talk station could work in Baltimore and had the wherewithal to make it happen when no one else would. But a combination of deep-pocketed competition and his overinflated ego will be the undoing of WNST.

According to DCRTV (6/18), Ken's out too and Steve Davis is joining the Ed Norris Show and possibly even getting top billing! I know it's a sports station but I really enjoyed listening to Ed's show and think it's a shame that they keep messing with the format.

I'm torn. I like listening to Ed most of the time and I'm a big fan of Ken's, but I wasn't crazy about the chemistry with the 105.7 morning show. Dumping Maynard was probably a good move, and I'm glad to hear Ken's moving back to sports-only, but I'm not sure replacing him with Steve Davis (who I also like) is going to be much different. I just don't think Ed's cut out for sports talk but he's got too much of a draw/audience to boot him. I'd really like to see him back in a non-sports format so he can do what he does best.

Here's my proposal for 105.7:

Bring Haynie in with Ed Norris.

Move Ken Weinman to 2-6 drive home with Jeremy Conn.

Move Garceau into 12-2 either with Cunningham or to replace Cunningham.

Have Zinno produce Weinman and Conn and let him have an hour or so after 6.

Ray has only had his own show on NST for a little while but he has been the backbone producing most of those shows for years and years. Ray really was the backbone of that operation. I say this with no malice, I think this could be the biggest of some big concerns about the financial viability of the place. A lot of good people who were there a long time are now gone. And say what you will about Nestor and Drew, there are others there who depend on the place for a job and a living, and you have to worry about them.

I don't know quite what that means, but in the real world sometimes you have to work for people you don't much care for, or whatever. Just because you happen to not like someone doesn't mean that everyone who works for that person is automatically bad. That's disappointing.

That's pretty much what that means. It alludes to a conversation in Clerks about how one character was disturbed upon realizing that since the second Death Star was still under construction and that "your average Stormtrooper doesn't know how to install a toilet" there had to be a lot of innocent contractors with no real allegiances killed.

Yep. I also thought about a more general movie/TV scenario of the security guard working at the building unknowingly for the villain who is in the wrong place at the wrong time and ends up with a snapped neck, or the support staff inside the evil-doer's lair that get killed in the shoot-out/explosion inside the place. But I knew I'd get rep for the Clerks reference ;)
