    • I agree with this.   Needs?  Maybe/maybe not.  I'm probably splitting hairs, but good swing decisions and barrels are his game.  Whether or not that leads to walks is something else.  He had a few bad PAs in Boston (maybe more, but those stick out), but he's been in control of the zone in general.
    • I learned recently Robert Orr, who concocted a selective aggression rating over at BP late last year, has an app tracking a bunch of stuff in season. https://therealestmuto.shinyapps.io/Damage/ He's chosen to use Damage per Batted Ball event as a primary sort, and it has BAL near the top with ATL-LAD-KC in the early going. I believe Louis Varland gets trained to throw a bunch of strikes probably about the same as Orioles pitchers, and the offense now seems kind of in a phase of making him sorry he did.    Paddack tonight may be more cat and mouse. O'Hearn bomb was sweet! He and Mountcastle are now performing about like you'd hope Basallo and Mayo will even more reliably in the longer term.
    • Yeah I recall him routinely having amazing games and mixing in some complete duds at Norfolk. Hopefully he gets right back on the horse because last night looked a little worryingly like his 2023 ABs. Sort of had a feeling he was due for one of these.
    • He was a victim of defensive shifting. And then it got in his head.  Now we are playing to his strengths.
