Sinatra for O's Fans

Recommended Posts

I was surprised there was no mention of him in the music forum. Is it because of the association with New York? That would be silly. I had a friend that entered various karaoke competitions singing only Sinatra and was quite good.

I also replay his one of his Christmas Albums every season. I started off the thread with the "Best Is Yet To Come" because of the hopeful sentiment and that's how I feel every year as an Orioles fan. And the "Summer Wind" which is my all time favorite Sinatra song, one which I personally sang in karaoke, and always reminds me of baseball season. I first remember hearing it in the movie "The Pope of Greenwich Village" with Mickey Rourke and Eric Roberts. Good flick.

Harry Connick seemed to be Sinatra's successor til Buble' came along. Although, you might argue he always sounded closer to what Sinatra sounded like in his prime than did Buble'. Buble' seems to have gone in more of a pop direction instead of Big Band.

They all are really having fun here while being great performers at the same time.

The next one starts at about the 40 second mark if you want to skip ahead.

I must admit... I try to make myself out to be a Sinatra aficionado. But I'm not really. At all.

But I am blown away by When I Was Seventeen. Frank is almost an accompanist in that the orchestration of that song just blows my my mind. Frank singing, violins, flutes, horns, OBOES and trills thereon, clarinets trilling too, violins plucked with fingers!... FULL orchestra! The arrangement is just so perfect. So Jazzy. So plaintive. So introspective. So subtle! Brilliance in every corner of it.

2012 was a a very good year! We should make this the Orioles theme song.

Kind of ironic since I'm a chauffeur, the line "we'd ride in limousines drove by our chauffeurs when I was 35."
