2014 World Cup Brazil

Who you all got the rest of the way? I think we're in for a great finish to this tournament. I could see anyone but Costa Rica winning it. I'm pulling for Colombia. My brother-in-law is Colombian and I think they've been the most consistent team in the tournament.

Before the tournament I picked Brazil to win it all. But once the group stage was completed and the final 16 bracket took form, I changed my pick to Argentina over Brazil in the final. My thinking was that Brazil would have such a hard road to just make it to the final, relative to Argentina, that they would run out of gas in the final.

However, no I'm not sure that Brazil makes it past Colombia. They have looked like the best team thus far. That being said I still can't quite take them over Brazil, in Brazil.

Today's other match, Germany/France, is also going to be amazing. I'll take Germany but just like Brazil/Colombia it's a total tossup, imo.

I watched 200 of the 210 minutes of game action today and saw no goals. Of course Argentina would score right before I got to the TV.

All four of the teams left have played well overall. All four have shown some weaknesses. Brazil's home field advantage is neutralized by the injury to Neymar and the suspension of Thiago Silva. I think the Germans have been the better team this tourney, so I'll go with them. The Netherlands haven't looked good the past two games. Argentina hasn't looked great, but they have been solid. I'll go with Argentina. If someone reminds Van Persie that he's a world class striker then I feel the Dutch will win. Both games are really toss ups in my eyes though.

Never underestimate the probability of Jogi Loew making some completely daft, reactionary tactical decision that ruins the match. Germany has had Halbfinale-itis the last few go-rounds, just can't get over the hump. I'm waiting for him to put Lahm back in midfield with an assignment to man mark Fred, start the horrifically slow Mertesacker, and play out-of-form Goetze as false 9. And I assume there will be another subpar refereeing job (though calling Velasco Carballo's officiating yesterday "subpar" is being kind) with tactical fouls and persistent infringement ignored, so Brazil will be able to kick them all over the park the way they did to Spain in the Confed Cup final. I'm so ridiculously pessimistic here it isn't even funny.

I was rooting for CRC as the underdogs, but when you get right down to it, 4 hours of watching them park the bus is about all I can take. NED-ARG should be a much better matchup.

7-1 holy moly, somebody pinch me.

German fans apparently were asked to remain in the stadium after the match so the police could escort them out. Tonight could be ugly.

Given the talent of Brazil, that it was a semi, and that it was in Brazil, that has to be the worst loss in World Cup history. Totally crushing for the fans.

Congrats to Klose for setting the goal scoring record. He's not the best player with the ball, but he's one helluva finisher.

So Argentina/Germany for the 3rd time. Should be interesting but I've had Germany since the start. Argentina just hasn't shown the offense.

These semi-final games have been the most fun to watch - teams not afraid of each other and playing real soccer instead of teams packing 9 or 10 guys behind the ball. That has made it difficult to tell how good teams are - particularly Argentina which has faced numerous teams packing it in.

Germany has been the class of the tournament with great passing and movement off the ball as well as ball control in the final third. Argentina is probably going to possess the ball better than any team Germany has played and might also possess the best offensive group to go out the German defense on counter-attacks. Germany should be too much - their overall talent level borders on unfair, but I believe Argentina could have a great chance if they score first.

Did you think yesterday's match was good? I didn't watch all 120+ minutes, but from what I saw it wasn't played with much urgency. There couldn't have been 3-4 real chances on goal the first 90, and the first half the Dutch keeper literally had more touches (and not exactly diving saves) than Robbin or Van Persie.

I'm with Drungo, I didn't think yesterday's game was all that great. The Dutch had very little urgency. They didn't pressure the ball and they didn't move off the ball very well. Argentina seemed the more aggressive team and had the better chances. I think some of the credit (blame?) needs to go to the defensive players. They played well collectively, kept their shape, and denied guys like Messi and Robben from getting the ball in dangerous areas. Great defense like tight marking and keeping a strong line is hard to notice in real time.

I think Sunday's match should be excellent. I think both teams will go for it and there should be excitement. I can't see either team playing conservative.
