X-Men Movie Universe Updates

Recommended Posts

I figured that it would be easier to just make a combined thread, much like we have for the various MCU phases.   I'd put this info. there, but (for those who don't know) X-Men is owned by Fox and are not related to the MCU in any way.

Deadpool 2 update.  Ryan Reynolds posted the 1st look at Josh Brolin as Cable.

1st trailer for the New Mutants.

The first thing I noticed was the quality.  Maybe it's just me, but this looks more like a TV show than it does an actual film released in theaters.  Also, if this didn't have the name "New Mutants", I would have had absolutely no idea this had anything to do w/ the X-Men Universe.  I still own the full, original 100 issue run from the 80's/early 90's and I've read the short-lived 2nd run from around 2009.  This didn't remind me of ANY of that. lol

I have no problem w/ super hero movies branching out into different genre's, but I honestly didn't see anything in this trailer that made me want to see this ... and I loved the original source material.  I'm hoping the next trailer is much better.

Well, there's ONE way to get your movie rights back.

It seems Disney has had preliminary talks with FOX to buy it's TV and movie studio.

Quote

21st Century FOX is in talks to sell parts of its company to Disney, in a deal that could see movie rights to the X-Men and Fantastic Four return to Marvel. One of the parts FOX is looking to sell is the 20th Century FOX movie and TV production studio, which one presumes would include the rights to anything said studio controls, including the X-Men and Fantastic Four superhero teams.

[...]

CNBC has updated their original story to say that while FOX and Disney have indeed had sale talks over the past few weeks, the two companies aren’t currently communicating, and that a deal is by no means certain. That said, CNBC also acknowledges that sale talks could be revisited in the future. For what it’s worth, FOX stock prices soared upward right after CNBC’s initial report was released.

Obviously, these talks are preliminary and could end up going no where, but this would be huge if Disney were able to get the X-Men and FF back.  I've like most of FOX's X-Men movies, but it really is 50/50 on whether they'll be good or not and their "continuity" from film to film is a complete joke.  Seeing that franchise rebooted and added to the MCU would be huge, though it would likely mean the end to shows like Legion and The Gifted.

New Mutants was only 3 months away from release, but now, Fox has officially pushed the film back into 2019.

Quote

A source for The Wrap is reporting that New Mutants was delayed from its original April 2018 release date to February 2019 in part because the film “isn’t scary enough” in its current form. Tracking Board is reporting something similar, namely that “word on the street” is that New Mutants did well in test screenings but not great, and Fox wants to add more scares in order to make the film even more of a full-blown horror offering.

This was supposed to be the year that Fox had three X-Men movies in theaters.  That already changed when New Mutants was pushed back into Feb. 2019.  Now, it looks like Deadpool 2 will be the only X-Men film released this year with both X-Men: Dark Phoenix and New Mutants getting new release dates.

New Mutants was supposed to be out already, but was pushed back almost a year.  It is now being pushed back again, this time to Aug. 22, 2019.

X-Men: Dark Phoenix was scheduled for Nov. 2 of this year, but has now been pushed back to the Feb. slot that New Mutants was previously in.

If you know anything about movie companies, you know that Jan. and Feb. is where they dump bad movies to die and forget about them.  It's one of the reasons Deadpool and Black Panther did so well.  Both films are really good, but they're outliers of typical Jan./Feb. releases.  Black Panther is a great film that was released in Feb. when there hadn't been a single good film w/ mass appeal for audiences since Christmas time.  Not only was there nothing before its release, but it's faced similar competition throughout it's run.  It's been almost a month and a half since Black Panthers' release and it has finally been pushed out of the #1 spot ... by a film that failed to do $30 mil. it's opening weekend (Pacific Rim: Uprising).  So basically, the only thing that pushed B.P. out of the #1 spot is the fact that it's well into it's 2nd month and most everyone has seen, with many people seeing it multiple times. lol

Sadly, I don't see the same outcome for X-Men: Dark Phoenix.  It had a pretty good holiday release window this year with nothing to compete with during it's release week and this being one of the first holiday seasons in years that didn't have a Star Wars movie film dropping.  In fact, the only competition I think it had this Nov. was Wreck-It-Ralph 2 and the 2nd Fantastic Beasts film.  This Dec. seems rather barren with the only major films being Aquaman, a Bumblebee spin-off and a Mary Poppins' sequel.

Today was the last day of the San Diego Comic Con.  One of the biggest comic conventions of the year which has expanded in recent years to include most anything pop culture related.  A lot of movies, especially comic-based movies, now choose to debut their movie trailers at SDCC.  Strangely, both New Mutants and Dark Phoenix were both absent.  Two movies that were supposed to be released this year, but were both pushed back into 2019.  This just lends more weight to the rumors that many think Disney is essentially trying to bury both of these movies until the Fox buyout is officially done.  Then, they can go about planning/recasting the X-Men for the MCU.

Fox finally put out a trailer for Dark Phoenix.  Not sure if this was planned or because the Russian version leaked on Tues./Wed.

2nd teaser trailer.

This one is noticeably missing a release date.  Just says, "Coming Soon."

I think they keep having to do re-shoots because test audiences don't like it.

The New Mutants has officially been pushed back again, now shooting for an April 3, 2020 release.

This is now the 3rd time this film has received a significant push from it's release date.  Remember, this film was originally supposed to release over two years ago.  It's done and ready to go.
