Can't see any chinks in the armor.  The K rate isn't great but he runs a lot of deep counts.  I still wish it was lower though.  Seems like a no brainer.  Witt is a year older than most of his competition.  That's huge at that age.  Rutschman. Rutschman. Rutschman!

SB% has gone down each of the last 2 years, something to keep an eye on.

He’s not hitting cheapies either

That crouch, and the switch-hitting.  We had Steady Eddie...Steady Adley?  And I imagine Ad-ley, Ad-ley will be too evocative not to work if he becomes a star for us.

Based on Luke's analysis, the statistics, and other industry experts - I hope they take Rutschman. I wasn't a proponent of a college catcher several months ago, but he looks as close to can't miss as you're going to get at this slot.

I worry this board is going to call for Elias' head if he takes Witt, Abrams, or even more shockingly Vaughn. Going to put my faith in Elias for now. The year he selected Brady Aiken #1, Aiken was pretty close to the consensus best player on the board and he flopped after failing to sign. Appel was considered by many to be the best in the draft and that failed too. Correa was a consensus Top 5 guy, but many thought Buxton was the obvious #1 pick and Elias got that one right.

He's not going to get every pick correct. No matter who he takes next month, I'll wait a few years before judging too harshly.

I'll go on record that Vaughn ends up with a better career than Witt.

Fangraphs #51 prospect in baseball over their #56.

Do you think there is a discernible difference between the 51st and 56th ranking?

Lots of folks here like Witt.

I was replying to someone that viewed a Vaughn pick as being "shocking".

Put it this way: if he picks anyone other than Rutschman, that player had better turn out to be a stud.    If he picks Rutschman and he disappoints, nobody will really criticize him.    But if he goes a different direction and the pick doesn’t pan out, he’ll get crucified.

That said, he really needs to be judged on the whole draft.   It doesn’t take a genius to draft Rutschman.    But what kind of value does he get from the other picks?

Totally agree. But we likely won't know the answer to that question this summer and many will want to have made up their minds before a week's worth of games are played in our system.

Oh yeah.    The bar is going to be ridiculously high and people are going to be incredibly impatient for results.

Most people forget that before Matt Wieters had his ridiculous A+/AA season, he played in the Hawaiian Winter League and was pretty mediocre there.    Brandon Snyder outhit him by a substantial margin.

Why am I thinking Wieters won the MVP for the Hawaiian Winter League?

My "shocking" comment about Vaughn is that I would guess Elias passing on Rutschman would be due to him wanting a young, high upside player. If he selects the second-best college hitter, and one that plays 1st base at that, it would tell me he's trying to go way underslot. I guess that would be one way to "create a talent pipeline" by adding more overslot players with later picks. I think most could accept arguments for Rutschman (#1 on most boards) or Witt/Abrams (young with massive upside) over a college first basemen.

It shouldn't come into consideration when looking to add the best available talent, but there would also be many wondering why you take a college first basemen who is theoretically close to ML ready when you just moved Mountcastle to first and he seems to be taking off with the bat. You already have that guy.
