Is Santander part of the future?

Smith over Wilkerson? No way. I'd take Wilkerson any day. He's better.

I was going to say the same. Smith has a bad arm and the whole league knows it. I don’t know what Wilkerson’s problems are. Maybe he’s just a hair less good at everything, but he doesn’t have a glaring flaw like Smith. Smith has had his fun, has his pension and health care and $300,000 in the bank Send him on his merry way.

You could also just option him...

Wilkerson is also playing OF for an extended time for the first time in his career. CF at that.

Smith has a hot streak. Maybe he was just really motivated by getting DFAd by TOR. TOR fans had the same complaints we have about Smith’s defense.

I think Wilkerson could give us a .750 OPS at 2B/OF.

I think Wilk is a keeper. Flaherty did well for us while hitting about .230 for 7 years. Wilk can defend competently everywhere, and conceivably frees a roster spot for another pitcher. That’s money in the bank.

It’s not just what he does, it’s what the guys around him do. I want someone who defends well. Whoever can defend as well as hit is ok in my book.

I think Hays is supposedly a good defender, Stewart is not, dunno about Diaz. I think Stewart is slow( faster than he looks but slow) but I don’t know enough about any of them, much less McKenna et al, to predict who our best 3 will be in two years.

But Santander is certainly one of our best three right now, and probably next year as well. Get rid of Broxton and Smith, move Trey to 1B, Wilkerson becomes new Ryan Flaherty Swiss Army knife guy( and maybe saves a roster spot by playing Inf and Of) and everyone is happy. You got two spaces for new guys and things play out over time.

so Yes...

Stewart has above average sprint speed and average for a corner OF.

I’ve seen him get some good jumps too.

Ok thanks for the Info. Is his defense better than Santander or Wilk? I have no idea but my own goal is for best possible defense.

That’s a very generous prediction given his age and minor league track record. He’s on a hot streak right now. I think he’s more likely a .650 kind of bat. Fringe major leaguer. He certainly has the capability to improve at CF and be a capable fourth OF type.

Love Santander, but I feel like we should wait until whatever the amount of ABs it was before DSJ started tanking. The Dwight Zone.

I haven’t seen enough of either guy honestly. Mostly going by statcast numbers.

Stewart is slightly faster with Santander having a slightly better arm, so it could be a wash defensively. Both certainly capable of being average defensive corner OF’s. The organization seems to prefer Santander for whatever that is worth.

I think Wilkerson has more of a long term ability to play center with more experience.

I'm not sure there's a single player on the active roster right now who's "part of the future". I'm also thinking this rebuild is going to take longer than I expected. Like hopefully we're flirting with .500 in five years longer.

How long did you expect the rebuild to take?

I was hoping we'd be flirting with .500 in three year. Probably too optimistic in hindsight.

Willie Mays was 20 and Bob Hamelin was 26.  Santander is not a rookie and had OPS of .547 at age 23.  People sure like to throw out misleading stats on here.

Here, I'll translate for you:  Santander is inexperienced and much of the experience he has was after getting ripped out of A ball by being a Rule 5er. It's nice that he's hitting well in 150-odd PAs this year, but let's wait just a few minutes before declaring him a contributing member of the contending 2023 Orioles.
