CAA thread

Recommended Posts

I know there are some Towson, Delaware, JMU, GMU, Bill and Mary, and other fans out here...

GMU opens there season with a home win against Harvard. Pretty balanced attack in their win. ODU gave Georgetown a scare last night.

Hopefully we can generate a lot of CAA talk in this section this year, it should be a good one!

Some big CAA games this week:

Monday: William and Mary faces Richmond. W&M should be down this year, but this would be a big win for the CAA against a probable tourney team from the A-10. W&M go routed by UVA in their opener.

Also, VCU plays always-tough Winthrop out of the Big South in the pre-season NIT in Winston-Salem. VCU handled UNC-Greensboro in their first game of the season. They'll play again tomorrow against either Wake Forest or Hampton. Wake is as down as they'll ever be this year, so this is a great chance for VCU to win two games and get to the semi-finals at Madison Square Garden. That is always good pub for the league to get a team there, so I'll be rooting for VCU to do that.

ODU plays High Point at home in a game they should win easily. They lost a heartbreaker to Georgetown in the season opener.

Tuesday: The aforementioned VCU game, hopefully against Wake Forest for the right to go to MSG.

The other big game Tuesday is Northeastern taking on Southern Illinois in a game that will be on ESPN at 10 AM. They got a win against BU in their opener, and again, any time you have an ESPN game it's nice to get the conference a win. One of the best players in the conference, Chase Allen will be on display.

In other matchups, Towson takes on Coppin State, UNC Wilmington hosts Liberty and Georgia State plays at McNeese State. All three should be near the bottom of the CAA this season.

Wednesday: Only game on the slate is Delaware at Cornell. UD got trounced by Ohio (a good team who should win the MAC) in their first game. Cornell of course is the defending Ivy League champs who went to the Sweet 16 last season.

Thursday: Couple of big games. Defending CAA POY Charles Jenkins and Hofstra play against UNC at 5 on ESPN 2 in the Puerto Rico event. It would be nice if Hofstra could at least hang around (ala JMU at Kansas State) and not get blown out. They'll meet either Western Kentucky (a good squad from the Sun Belt) or Tubby Smith's Minnesota team on Friday. (They'll get one of WVU, Davidson, Nebraska or Vanderbilt in their third game down there on Sunday)

Also, George Mason plays in the Charleston Classic, opening with Charlotte out of the A-10. This should be a great game. Charlotte is a middle of the pack A-10 squad. In their second game in the tournament on Friday, Mason will play either NC State or East Carolina, hopefully we'll see Mason get a shot at the Wolfpack. Their third game there will be on Sunday, and they will play Georgetown, Coastal Carolina, S.C. Upstate or Wofford (Obviously hoping for a Mason-GTown final here)

Also on Thursday UNC Wilmington hosts Morehead State.

Friday: The second games in their respective tournaments for Hofstra and Mason (For conference well-being purposes, hopefully against Minnesota and NC State)

ODU gets their tournament (the Paradise Jam in Orlando) started by playing St. Peter's. They'll play again on Saturday (with a loss) or Sunday (with a win) against either Clemson or Long Beach State. Their third game will be next Monday against Alabama, Seton Hall, Iowa or Xavier.

Besides those, a couple of kind of boring matchups Georgia State hosting Troy and Delaware hosting Howard.

Saturday: UNC-Wilmington is the headliner here, as they travel to Ohio State. Hopefully they can hang around.

A good matchup between Siena from the MAAC and Northeastern. It would be nice for NU to beat "name" teams from the Missouri Valley (SIU) and MAAC (Siena) in the same week.

Drexel plays Penn in a Big 5 matchup, JMU plays at The Citadel and Towson is at Buffalo.

Sunday: Hofstra and Mason in their third games of their tournaments.

Also, William and Mary goes to the Carrier Dome to take on Syracuse. Judging by their outing against UVA the other night I don't like the Tribe's chances. (What a brutal stretch to start the season for the Tribe, as they go at UVA, at Richmond and at Syracuse. Ouch.)

Anyways, should be a great week as things start to get rolling.

Great work as always YardBirds.

Real good game between Northeastern and the Salukis. Chase Allen and the Huskies win on a huge mental error as SIU called a timeout with none left allowing Allen to hit the game winning technical. Heck of early OOC showdown that unfortunately was filled with more of its share of poor officiating.

Really wish the VCU/ Wake Forest game was on TV. Let’s hope Charles Jenkins drops 50 every game in the Puerto Rico tip-off.

I know SIU is down this year but it's nice to see a team expected to be in the bottom half of our conference go on the road and beat a team from another good mid-major conference. Chase Allen was great down the stretch for the Huskies and how about Joel Smith having the game of his life?

I fully expect VCU to beat Wake Forest tonight. The Deacs have already lost to Stetson and barely beat Hampton last night. It'd be huge for the CAA to get VCU to the semis of the NIT and into MSG.

Charlotte game was great I heard. I think I've mentioned this before but I wrote for Mason's paper. Real happy to see Luke Hancock continuing to emerge as a star. I did a story on him last winter. He's a good player but he's a nice guy too. Also had a neat conversation with Cam Long about the Hangover this year as well. Team looks good so far. Agree, would love to see them play Georgetown. It would be a nice test just like the Vilanova game last year.

What an awesome game; Mason’s starting 5 looks ready to do some serious damage this year and the bench is looking real solid with the Freshman Arledge and Allen leading the way. Luke the skywalker was unstoppable scoring 13 straight points in the paint for Mason while putting players from Charlotte on the wrong side of a poster.

It’s going to be a heck of a battle against NC State tonight. The freshman from NC State, Ryan Harrow and C.J. Leslie need to be shown it isn’t that easy at the NCAA level. Lorenzo Brown needs to be contained tonight; with that being said NC State doesn’t have the experience of Mason and needs to be show the way to the third place game. GMU needs to show up, play as a team, and let their talents take over on the court.

Need the Georgetown game to happen; this is just a great opportunity in general for Mason to gain some nice OOC wins and show and prove if they are the best team in the DC area this year.

Let’s go Patriots! (ESPNU 6pm)

Congrats to VCU on the NIT season tip-off as well; take care of business against the Vols.

Hey GMU Orioles fan, any chance we can read some of your articles?

I watched the 2nd half mostly. I had the sound down and it seemed that Hancock may have had some funky odor or something because nobody on Charlotte wanted to get close to him. He drove to the basket without any resistance. Is Johnny Williams out of the rotation these days? I mostly saw 1,3,and 5 rotating in with Morrison.

Well, up and down week last week for the CAA. Mason couldn't get the big win against NC State and then lost a tough OT game to Wofford. W&M almost pulled off the upset at Syracuse but couldn't hang on. ODU came through with a big win over Clemson, and has a HUGE chance to beat Xavier today and get another nice win.

MONDAY: Big day for the CAA as I mentioned, ODU plays against Xavier for the Paradise Jam title. Beating Clemson and Xavier back-to-back would be huge for the Monarchs. JMU also hosts Princeton in a game that would be nice to get as well.

TUESDAY: Three 'meh' games. JMU hosts Presbyterian, Georgia State hosts Utah Valley and UNCW plays at North Carolina A&T.

WEDNESDAY: 5 games, the big one of course being VCU in the NIT Season Tip-Off against Tennessee. A Rams win here to get into the title game would be awesome.

Also on Wednesday, Drexel plays at a pretty good Rhode Island team in what would be a nice win for the conference if the Dragons could pull it off.

Also Mason hosts Radford, JMU hosts Bucknell and Towson hosts Navy.

THURSDAY: VCU hopefully in the NIT Season Tip-Off Title game, but if not they'll at least be in the consolation game. They'll face either UCLA or Villanova.

FRIDAY: Hofstra hosts Wagner and W&M hosts Gardner-Webb in a couple of average games.

SATURDAY: 6 games, none of which really stand out. Biggest one is Northeastern at Utah State, a win that could look pretty good come March.

Also, Delaware at Lafayette, FAU at Mason, Eastern Michigan at JMU, Mercer at W&M and Samford at Georgia State

SUNDAY: Drexel hosts Binghamton and W&M hosts Western Carolina.

So hoping for a big win for ODU tonight and a good showing from VCU in the NIT Wednesday and Thursday. Those two cementing themselves as at-large candidates certainly will open the door for a possiblity of multiple bids and maybe even 3 bids.

I don’t have time to post a ton about Mason but they have been a much better team since they left the Charleston classic. Cam Long, Ryan Pearson, Luke Hancock, Mike Morrison, and Vertrail Vaughns have been playing great basketball.

Interested to see how Chris Fouch and Drexel play at the Yum center - 9pm, ESPNU.

ODU, 8-2 overall owning the A10 with wins over Xavier, Dayton and Richmond as well as a win over Clemson.

The CAA is ranked #8 in conference RPI.
