  1. Seemed like a decent man and a fine philanthropist. As a UB Law alumnus, I appreciate his donation to open the new law center and I respect that he wanted the new building named after his parents, rather than himself.
  2. Hitter every time. It is tough to ever consider a pitcher as a #1 prospect. Just look at the pitchers who have been Baseball America's #1 prospect since 1990: Daisuke Matsuzaka, Josh Beckett, Rick Ankiel, Brien Taylor, Todd Van Poppel and Steve Avery. The hitters who have been BA #1 prospects since 2010: Jackson Holliday, Gunnar Henderson, Adley Rutschman, Wander Franco, Vlad Guerrero, Jr., Ronald Acuna, Andrew Benintendi, Corey Seager, Kris Bryant, Byron Buxton, Jurickson Profar, Bryce Harper (2x) and Jason Heyward. Profar and Benintendi are the only players on that list who aren't bonafide stars (besides Holliday and Franco due to extenuating circumstances). Generational pitching talents flame out regularly. Best case scenario they win you a World Series first like Strasburg, but often times they don't.
  3. Holliday's at-bats, if he makes the team, will come at the expense of Westburg and Urias. If Holliday is on the roster, Westburg probably starts 3 games a week at third and 1 game every other week or so at second, with Holliday serving as the primary backup shortstop.
  4. Just circling back on this one. You think Gunnar is going to be off crutches by Opening Day?
  5. If the O's make the playoffs, I expect him to be doing that this October.
  6. Someone asked Keith Law about Basallo in his chat today, and I thought his answer merited mention here. DH 1:52 Suppose Samuel Basallo were a solid average defensive 1B, and not a catcher. Where do you suppose he'd rank in top 100? Keith Law 1:52 Middle, probably 40-60 range. A #50-ish prospect at first base is still pretty good darn good!
  7. There were two other women, one who sought a protective order against him and one who accused him of sexual assault.
  8. Team - "Gunnar nursing syrained oblique, expected to miss 2-3 weeks". Brandon Hyde said he is not concerned at all about Henderson's health. You - "Gunnar will miss Opening Day, six weeks from today".
  9. No reason not to have a filled 40-man roster. May as well fill the dartboard. Plenty of options for guys to come off if Holliday makes the Opening Day roster.
  10. Arbitration decisions for Hays and Webb are expected to come down today, per the Associated Press.
  11. Mayo hasn't played an inning in the outfield yet, will be interesting to see whether he does this spring.
  12. Biggest surprise to me is the absence of any more outfielders (Fabian, Bradfield, Beavers, etc.). Can always bring guys over from minor league camp for the day, though.
  13. I wonder if Jackson, Gunnar or Adley would be interested in a similar deal.
  14. Keith Law's Top 100 prospects list is out. 1. Jackson Holliday 20. Samuel Basallo 27. Coby Mayo 62. Heston Kjerstad 64. Enrique Bradfield Law has long been a Joey Ortiz booster and has him at #58.
  15. Arrested in 2019, prosecution deferred upon completion of a 52-week program. Arrested in 2023, the DA announced last month that they wouldn't pursue charges, but that doesn't preclude MLB from punishing him, which they almost certainly will. I would be surprised if he was signed before MLB punishment comes down.
