Most catchers can’t hit so they are not rotating at DH on a regular basis. The NL only recently got the DH so that wasn’t an option for a lot of the good hitting catchers back in the day. It’s not really an apples to apples comparison in many ways.

No, Gunnar was not sent down. And I definitely don’t expect Holliday to be sent down anytime soon. I think they may pick their spots to start him if he continues to struggle this badly, but the negative attention of a demotion would be real challenging.

As others mentioned, Gunnar got a pretty long leash. I am sure Hyde and the organization will do what they can to stack the deck in Jackson's favor...he may platoon more with Mateo and go through stretches were he avoids left-handed pitchers and maybe even some of the tough righties.

The "review" language you used in your post reminded me of this scene! Fun stuff. The book felt like the lie to me!

The movie was a childhood favorite for me and I was in funky headspace when I read the book. I may have appreciated it more if I could divorce my feelings for the sappy movie, which I totally admit is sappy, from the experience of the book.
