  1. I am definitely guilty of this. Just makes the spring more interesting if you think the stats matter when we all know they don't. The one thing that's worth paying attention to is injuries or physical changes, like a pitcher getting a bump in velocity. One example is when Britton showed up to camp throwing that 98 mph sinker and all of a sudden people started talking about him as closer. I was naturally skeptical but the spring speculation turned out absolutely correct in that case. Of course, similar comments were made about Jason Garcia when we grabbed him in the Rule 5 the following year. Stuff like, "He throws 98 and the ball has a different sound when it hits the catcher's glove". We all remember how that turned out.
  2. Agreed, I do not think this will actually happen and it goes against everything we know about spring stats and modern GM's. This is more of a thought exercise than a serious prediction. While I still have O'Hearn penciled in for the opening day roster, I do think he could be on a shortish leash should he show signs of regression.
  3. Yes, I have been public about my biases against Akin. But I also don't put much stock in spring performance and priority on options/asset accumulation fit Elias's MO.
  4. Answer: by optioning (or trading) O'Hearn. We have mostly been treating O'Hearn as a lock. But if Mountcastle can be more or less full time 1B, Stowers and Cowser can both make it. Westburg, Santander, and Urias can play some 1B when needed. O'Hearn would still be a phone call away in AAA. O'Hearn had a great year for us and a fine spring, but is he likely to repeat? Even if he does, Stowers could be better. Could O'Hearn be more vulnerable than we think? RHP lineup would be Holliday 2B, Adley C, Gunnar SS, Santander RF, Mountcastle 1B, Mullins RF, Stowers DH, Urias 3B with bench of Mateo, McCann, Westburg, Hays.
  5. What a stacked lineup 1 through 9. This would be exactly my roster. I prefer Teheran to Akin as Akin has options. The Suarezes are possibilities but they are on minor league contracts so advantage to Teheran. This roster really looks perfect to me, unless there is an injury or something we don't know about.
  6. Depends on if Holliday is the 2B.
  7. Captain Redbeard is very close depending on what they do with Holliday. If it isn't Holliday I made the case for McKenna on another thread. Could also be Maton. I have a visceral irrational dislike for Akin but he has been good this spring. If he was pitching hurt last year I could be talked into giving him another shot, but I could also see Suarez, Teheran or even Vespi there.
  8. The opening day roster matters for Holliday in that the timing could determine whether we get an extra draft pick, extra year of service time, or neither. Same to some extent with Mayo/Cowser/Kjerstad/Stowers, who could all be in the ROY conversation if things break their way. If Holliday doesn't make it, then the organization has every incentive to hold him back for quite a while to ensure he doesn't finish top two like Adley did.
  9. I don't see DET on our schedule until Sept but Stowers should have that series circled on his calendar and we should get him some AB's vs Maeda. I thought Kjerstad had the advantage for 4th OF coming into the spring, and while I don't normally like to put too much stock in spring stats, Cowser and Stowers have been outstanding. Probably the most interesting spring battle.
  10. Almost like they are going out of their way to not play the Gunnar Holliday combo. Signal that Holliday isn't making it, or a smokescreen 3D chess signal that he is?
  11. Even if he has the best chance of all the candidates, there are a lot of candidates, including Mayo, Kjerstad, and Cowser, depending on when they are brought up, so I can't go any higher than 50%. Hard to know how any of these guys are going to do at the highest level and both he and Carter would be essentially skipping AAA.
  12. Kjerstad and Mayo could both win it! I think the rules really argue for giving Holliday a shot. Am I correct that if any rookies starting on the OD roster were to struggle, we could option them for a month or so and then gain the extra year? (Assuming they don't come back and finish top two).
  13. Well the scenario I posted above that you said was terrible roster construction was specifically assuming Holliday doesn't make it. I am not wedded to McKenna but I don't see where Kjerstad plays with Cowser unless O'Hearn is optioned. I think it is likely we will see O'Hearn regress and we will see Kjerstad at that point. In the meantime I'd rather have a RHB and true CF to spell Mullins.
  14. I am firmly against Wong but the only reason I can see is that he is a lefty, plays infield, and isn't Holliday. Maton also fits that profile.
