  1. C'mon. The dude has shown that he can go on insane heaters, but he's also going to cancel that out by being an automatic out at the plate for a few months. I'll give you that he's exciting on the bases, but his defense isn't what it was 2 years ago. I don't know if that's because he's regressing as a player or if he needs the steady playing time to get in a groove, but when you're talking about "baked in value" that's taking things a bit far when he put up .5 fWAR last year. I know you're head over heels with anyone that puts on an Orioles uniform but there's so much about Mateo that's just...frustrating. And also replaceable. And I LIKE Mateo, he's one of my favorite bad Orioles of all time, he seems like a great teammate, clubhouse guy but there's not much value here, other than he can stand at some different positions on defense and steal a base if he gets on base...which is a monumental task for him at times.
  2. What's your definition of a "professional hitter" then?
  3. I can see that. Also being patient at the plate, something he's not known for.
  4. If you're Dillon Tate, the good news is that the bullpen isn't too deep so you've got some time to get it together. IIRC, (and this is stating the obvious) he's a vastly different pitcher when he's in the mid 90s compared to the low 90s. I remember when suddenly ticked up a few MPH, he was a lot better. Sitting around 90 yesterday wasn't encouraging. He could be a big shot in the arm if he can get that velocity back and get back to where he was. But again, the good news for that guy is that the bullpen is a bit thin so he might have some time to get back on track.
  5. I think so. And I'm not sure if it's part of what Houston normally does, but trade some prospect capital for the piece or two you think you need to get over the top. I don't expect 9 figure FA deals, but if they made one, I would give them the benefit of the doubt. As long as that 9 figure starts with a 1 and not with a 2, that's most likely okay. I will be super interested to see what they do about Corbin Burnes, especially if Burnes keeps dealing like he did yesterday.
  6. That's what I'd like to see him do. Not opposed to spending 100+ million on someone in free agency but it has to make sense. Fortunately for us, DR seems to be the type to let baseball people make baseball decisions and we've got some of the best baseball people in the business. Really, the best thing he could do is give Elias and Sig (and Eve, @Roy Firestone!) blank checks.
  7. I took it to mean not spend irresponsibly. Like, I don't think Elias would ever think the Javy Baez deal would be something he'd do, for example.
  8. Yeah, I like him. He's an impressive guy, he's done a lot of great philanthropic work. Purchasing the Magna Carta is super impressive. Also, it's clear he's a diehard fan and he seems to be comfortable enough with himself to allow others to make decisions. But I've said it before and I'll say it again, just because he's not Angelos doesn't mean he's going to spend money. A lot of people around here seem to think it's a foregone conclusion that he will because...well, that's what people want to believe. The good news here is that the Angelos group set a really low bar to compare to, practically anything will be better. Yesterday when that pinecone Brown asked him a question, something about how he and his new ownership group can help the team win, he didn't mention spending money in free agency. I'm going to re-watch the game today while I'm working and I'll listen closer to what he said, but he said a lot of things and none of them had anything to do with spending money and raising the payroll. Now, maybe he was caught off-guard by that question and rattled off a few things that came to mind immediately, but if that's the case then spending money obviously isn't on the top of his mind. He's not said anything about it anywhere, from what I've seen. If someone can show me a quote where he's said that he'd like to spend in free agency, well, I'd love to be wrong. So I think we're in great hands from a lot of perspectives, but the big thing that everyone wants to know remains to be seen. And it's not a sure thing.
  9. Ohhhh, I can't wait. It's gonna be interesting when the honeymoon is over.
  10. I said 100-149. Most of that is coming from Means. The real question is how many starts will Bradish make? I think less than 5 before the forearm tightness happens and he's gotta get the TJ.
  11. All of a sudden we've got tropical CoC on here. I dunno what the thread title comes from, knowing Phil it's probably from some boring 18th century text that I had to read in college but fell asleep on.
  12. So far, he hasn’t given me a reason not to like him.
  13. You mean he’s not already?
  14. Hard to top 1992. Sutcliffe complete game shutout at the new park. People forget, but that 1992 team was surprisingly good after the dud squad of 1991. That Opening Day was a tone setter. This one was really good. It’s neck and neck for me.
