  1. Two moments I found interesting and enjoyable. At about the 12 minutes mark, DR said the job of the front office and manager is to “put the best players on the field, train them properly, and make sure that they’re adequately compensated.” And then at the end, Cal said “they have a good chance of making the playoffs” and DR interjected “WE do.” DR made an interesting point about getting African Americans in Baltimore more interested in playing and following baseball. He said only 4% of fans at Camden Yards are African American. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that the short “Next Chapter” video features an African American girl delighting in thumbing through an Orioles scrapbook. I bet you are going to see the Orioles really stepping up the efforts to get local kids to games and to build interest inside the city.
  2. Simply put, this guy does not need to make money off his baseball team. He’s got gobs of money, his main business is very profitable, and he’s 74 years old. He’s in it to win it and leave a legacy. And, he seems smart enough to let Elias do his thing.
  3. Nope. My heart breaks for them.
  4. The Yankees can improve a lot if they’re healthier. That’s the reason they underperformed expectations last year by so much. They lost 1,835 games to injury, compared to 788 for the Orioles. I’ve been tracking injuries for about the last 12 years, and 1,835 is the largest I can ever recall, by a pretty good margin. And it wasn’t just quantity. They lost a lot of key guys for significant chunks of time. Now, will this year be better? Hard to say. They have a lot of older players, and old guys get hurt more and don’t recover as fast.
  5. In a vacuum, Adley wouldn’t be the guy I most want to lock up, but he might be the easiest one and might be the cornerstone that allows others to decide they want in, too. So if he’s willing to play ball, I say go for it. I realize most catchers don’t age that well, but Adley is a guy whose value to the team isn’t measured solely by offensive stats. He’s an important leader on the team, whose presence on the roster made an enormous difference the minute he stepped on the field. The rebuilding era ended the instant he joined the club. And everyone in the clubhouse knows it. So, fine with me if Adley’s the first guy we lock up. It may make it easier to go after others. And I’ll bet on the guy earning his deal.
  6. Right. We’ll see what Elias wants to do. My guess is Elias would like to spend more, but still won’t want to overpay as compared to whatever value his models suggest. So we’re still going to be outbid when other teams are willing to be stupid, and there may be players in our organization who’d rather try to get some team to pay stupid money rather than signing a reasonable extension here.
  7. He has to build up to 5 innings/80+ pitches just like other pitchers did this spring. I’d say 4 outings minimum.
  8. Any thoughts yet? This looks complicated to navigate.
  9. They’re too good. They bore me.
  10. As I said in another thread, 10 years is long but you have to consider that the price is only $140 mm, so they can eat a couple of unproductive years at the end if they need to. For example, Realmuto got $115 mm for 5 years, starting at age 30. This is a useful data point for an Adley extension. I think I suggested 10/$200 mm a year ago, and elsewhere I saw some pundit proposed 8/$156 mm.
  11. To be clear, ZiPS does. The official Fangraphs projections are based partly on ZiPS, partly on Steamer, and their methodology of playing out the different scenarios is different than what Szymborski uses for ZiPS, too.
  12. Best record in the AL? Works for me!
  13. I don’t interpret it quite the same way you do. But I’m glad he has the input and recommendations of all relevant parts of the organization. It’s working.
  14. I’m not that worried about the 10 years because the total dollar amount is relatively modest. Look at it this way, Realmuto got 5/$115 mm beginning at age 30. I’d give Adley this deal in a heartbeat.
