Should trading for Blanton be our next move?

Phillies are most assuredly looking for a taker. It would certainly solve our need for a vet starting pitcher, although I'm not sure what numbers he'd put up in the AL East.

Now that our lineup is *seemingly* complete, should this be our next course of action?

No. I don't think we should block any of our good young starters like that. I am all about adding a guy like Bruce Chen to pitch out of the bullpen and be available to start in case we need a starter.

I don't really see this as a need this year. Going forward, having Tillman and Arrieta guaranteed spots in the rotation will be much more helpful than having an average innings eater.

I would take Blanton only if we don't give much up at all, and only if he's used as a bullpen guy/injury insurance spot-starter.

I'm down for either direction. A guy like Blanton that pushes someone (unfairly?) to AAA, or a guy like Chen that we can stash, or AAA minor league FA. I just continually think to August/September when injuries or fatigue force us to bring up some AAAA nobody just to fill a ML start.

Last year, with Millwood here, we at least had a credible rotation, til the end. I want guys fighting to get to the ML level, pushing aside solid (but old) guys, rather than even ONE "emergency start". I don't want to EVER hear that term used again.

It would not be an awful move. Plus it would keep him away from the Yankees who need him. Remember, it takes 7 or 8 starter to make it through a season.

It's risky, as I'm not sure Blanton would hold up well in the AL East, but it would be better to have him in the rotation than to go with Guthrie and Matusz plus all the unproven young arms.

Clay Buchholz spent half of 2009 in AAA. I want that!

I don't want Blanton. I agree with someone that can go to AAA or be in the pen.

No thanks. Blanton isnt really that good. I rather have britton or bergy fighting for a pitching spot.

Also, we no longer have David Hernandez. He easily could have started again for us. And the JJ experiment evidently is not happening for the same reason.

Blanton had a pretty high ERA (4.84) last year but his xFIP was 4.06 and his LD%/BABIP indicates some bad luck. I think he would be fine and if we could get him cheap I'm all over it.

A quality mid-rotation starter for a c prospect? This has AM stamped on it's forehead.

My barely informed opinion is that Young would be better. I just want someone(s) brought in for depth.
